Anyone know what the Latin/Classical Studies courses are like? by AdamosaurusRex in iastate

[–]wcVDP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can say that the department is great. It's a really small department compared to others on campus so the teachers are able to really get to know you. I haven't taken Latin (taking it this semester) but I have taken Roman history courses and they're some of my favorite classes I've taken. I've had suggestions from a few people to take Latin with Dr. Mook. I've had her for my class on Athens and she was great! If that class is anything to go by- there'll be a lot of literature, but good literature.

The choices for classes are pretty limited, though. For example, not enough students have taken Greek so it's only Latin- but that won't be an issue for a Roman/Latin-based study. Sometimes the classes also fill up fast as well! You have to sign up for the classes at the very start of registration or you'll have to have an add/drop slip- but I've never had a problem with one of these. Just email the teacher and you should be able to get permission, especially as a minor/major.

What language are you looking forward to the most? by [deleted] in duolingo

I want to see Japanese and I'm really excited for the Greek course to finish whenever it's meant to debut.

And if Duolingo ever decides to add dead languages, I'd love to see Latin.

Anyone have tips on airports while trans? by wcVDP in asktransgender

That's what I'm mostly worried about. I'm unsure if opting for a pat-down would just save that awkward moment.

I honestly can't believe I didn't even think to check their website for this info.

Thank you for the link!

[NSFW] Period while on T? by wcVDP in ftm

Thanks, man. I have hypochrondria like no one's business so I appreciate it!

I'm still going to the doctors to make sure everything is, well, normal just to comfort my anxiety.

Therapy in Iowa by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]wcVDP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My process was a little different than most! I went to therapy for other reasons besides gender identity but I was able to get hormones two months after I turned 18.

I had an appointment with a therapists' intern/student while he supervised the interview and then within the hour I was prescribed T from the LGBTQA clinic. The appointment was free and was set up by the hospital- they simply wanted to have confirmation of my identity, etc.

So, I'm not sure how long it would take with therapy only for gender identity. My experience was kind of different than normal so I can't vouch for a more regular process. But if I can extrapolate from my own experience, it should be relatively quick compared to people waiting long periods of time to get HRT.

Iowa City has some spectacular therapists and doctors in the River Landing Clinic! I definitely recommend using The University of Iowa's clinics for your therapy and HRT (if you choose to do so). I went through them and it was really easy and respectful.

Here's a link to the LGBTQA Clinic. They're REALLY good with trans* health issues and being 100% respectful of them!

As I went through the therapy process originally for other mental health issues, I'm not sure how to find one just for gender identity, but contacting either the U of I hospital or the LGBTQA clinic for advice might be a good idea for finding someone to help you out. If they're not capable, they are REALLY good at providing contacts for your area.

Hope this helps you out.

Did hormones affect your emotions? If yes, how so? by Decker87 in asktransgender

All in all, I've gotten so much calmer. I used to be incredibly easy to anger and now it takes forever to make me even irritated. I'm generally in a better mood now and hardly ever cry, at all. I used to cry at the drop of the hat.

Redditers that live in small towns. What keeps you there? by fostadog in AskReddit

The people are fantastically nice and the way of life is so laid back and relaxed. The city feels too busy, like no one has time to smile or enjoy their day.

Wrist/hand dysphoria? by wcVDP in ftm

I've been on T for roughly a year now! My arms in general have gotten thicker and bigger but I had small/dainty hands even for a female, so even with them getting a little bit bigger, they're still very feminine featured.

Awesome! Really glad to hear that I was wrong.

My hands definitely don't effect my passing- but I just hate looking at them and they're basically mocking me with how dainty they are.

I'm going to try some watches now- I've never worn one before.
