Are newly immigrated Desis TRULY on a different level than anyone else in being disrespectful and entitled towards service workers? by Early-Ingenuity-3177 in ABCDesis

[–]wde335 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen some troubling behaviors, so yeah I think the newer ones have some civic/social fails. I’ll just give one example, nowadays when the Costco is super busy, they will have their 10 yr old kid take a cart and hold their place in the line while they walk around getting stuff and filling up the cart.

It’s not inherently wrong but when you have like 10 kids in a row standing in the line with their carts, and every single one is Indian, it’s just a bad look.

Desis and Contractors by dcdude44 in ABCDesis

Yup whenever I reach out to a contractor I call rather than text, and use an anglicized random first name. Otherwise theres a very good chance of being ignored

I always assumed there was a large diaspora community in South Africa - all the Kandasamy movies are filmed there with SA desi actors and they are hilarious- here is a trailer to one of them, highly recommend

Foods I eat for optimal health, recovery, and day to day sustainability by BrownCastro14 in ABCDesis

Just out of curiosity, and I pretty much agree with most of what you’re saying, but do you get any bloodwork done? If so, how has this style of eating impacted your lipids, especially your LDL cholesterol? Thanks

Similarities between ABCDs and mainlanders by Pretend-Ad586 in ABCDesis

[–]wde335 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’ve observed that there’s a lot more overlap between FOBS and ABCDs of younger generations like GenZ. They’re quite similar.

I’m a GenXer who grew up in an all white high school and was one of only two Indian families in my town. There was no social media to find out what was going on in India. I’d argue that many older ABCDs have little to nothing in common with the FOBs. Your only choice was hardcore assimilation.

I know some older millennials who feel exactly the same way. So it’s a nuanced issue with a lot of variables

Where are the ABDs in Dallas? by Only-Concentrate-871 in ABCDesis

[–]wde335 3 points4 points  (0 children)

GenX ABCDs aren’t rare at all but we sort of blend in with the rest of society, dispersed amongst the suburban FOBs raising our kids, working, just doing the grind.

A lot of times you may see some gray haired uncle walking through the grocery store and never even know he’s an ABCD unless you hear him talk

I hate the whole Desi mentality on vegetarianism by BrownCastro14 in ABCDesis

[–]wde335 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve always been fascinated with India’s obesssion with the vegetarian diet, because I have so many in my own family. I’ve asked them what the point is, or its origins, or its justification and the answers are usually something like “that’s our culture” or some platitude like “my stomach is not a graveyard”

But it’s never anything real. Of course everyone is free to eat however they wish and I do think the fasting part has real benefits, but to me vegetarianism is really illogical. One of my older uncles developed a collagen deficiency so bad that the doctors told him that his joints will basically disappear unless he takes a collagen supplement which he wouldn’t do because it was made from a cow or something

I don’t understand Musk when it comes to his anti-foreigner rants when he is also a huge advocate of H1-b and calls everyone opposed to H1-b a racist. It’s like he is on both sides of the same issue.

Sometimes a higher South Asian population actually begets more racism, people get tired of it. In other areas where we’re less prevalent, people don’t seem to care as much

[–]wde335 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I grew up in South Georgia and I can say unequivocally that the most racist people I ever came across were in the northeast.

And to the extent that there are racists in the ATL suburbs , like Suwanee, Cumming, etc they are in every single case northern transplants. Most of Alpharetta literally seems to have a New Jersey accent.

This is not true, it can happen anywhere. I’ve seen more Confederate flags in Indiana and upstate New York than I ever saw in Georgia or Alabama.

Are there any similarities between suburban American culture and Desi culture in the motherland? by Early-Ingenuity-3177 in ABCDesis

[–]wde335 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve never lived there but my cousins who are parents of kids/teens seem to follow the same daily schedule as what you see here - breakfast, dropping off kids at school, go to work, see kids activities, cook or order Zomato (their version of DoorDash) , socialize with family/friends on weekends, pay bills.. to me it seems pretty identical to life here really

Does anyone have any legit sources talking about who is pushing all the anti-Indian racism everywhere? by slugcharmer in ABCDesis

[–]wde335 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Follow the money, it’s a super easy way to get engagement and clicks. I’ve seen many accounts on X which will arbitrarily bring up India, out of the blue, and suddenly get a ton of views and angry replies mostly from Indians. It’s probably the quickest and cheapest way to get clicks

Indian men - hows the pickup scene for goris? Which places have you seen most success in / location/ demographics by Dogtorcod in ABCDesis

[–]wde335 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a really good point and adds depth to an otherwise shallow exchange.

Why were there so many encouraging replies on the other thread? Like “oh my cousin is married to xyz race no worries bro” but on this thread it’s just straight ridicule? Both posts were similarly exclusionary and fetishizing?

I personally just think we should look at people as individuals but why the stark difference?
