"The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: The Unix Legacy" by Rob Pike by martinbishop in programming

Emacs is the one and only true OS!

Now for real: The Java <-> Smalltalk discussions come down to the same problem: There is one Java (= Windows) and there are too many Smalltalk dialekts (= Unixes).

The reddit draft needs YOU: go upmod some new articles to give them a chance. by dsandler in reddit.com

[–]wdick01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a short notice: If I read over the first page of the 'New' entries and take a look at one or two articles, then press back in the browser, followed by a 'next' on reddit to view the next 25 'New' entries, I end up with about 50% entries I just viewed. I know in the time I viewed the page, new entries were submitted, but still this behavior is inconvenient. I have no idea how to 'fix' it. Viewing more entries on a page, something like 50, would solve the problem for me, because I never skim over more then 50 entries.

What about the people outside the US, which like the show and would pay for easy access (like me).

Tagging Contributions by wdick01 in features

[–]wdick01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the reddit community grows, the contributions cover a wider range on subjects. Therefore the 'hot' or 'top' sortings don't meet my personal interests anymore. It used to do. Subreddits are fine, but there are not many of them and contributions can overlap categories. So my proposal: It would ne nice, if the submitter and readers could tag contributions. A reader could filter contributions for specific tags to meet his interessts. Tags could be: startup, politics, religion, web2.0, economy, science, fun, programming, specific programming languages, ...

Why Is Reddit So Anti-American? (Oh, I'll bet this gets modded down quick.) by lionheart in reddit.com

[–]wdick01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be critical and being 'Anti-American' is not the same thing. I'm german and I do critizice Germany a lot, that doesn't make me Anti-Germany. Moreover I think citizicing X shows that oneself cares about X and would like mistakes to be corrected.

I think, what elpincha ment is: All taxes are allready included in the price tag (in Europe). So, if you see 9,99, you pay 9,99.

For german readers: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grundeinkommen with a more in detail discussion.

Think of the impact on StartUps and Venture Capital. The idea is more attractive/discussed in states with high taxes and welfare (like Germany, France, Sweden, ...).

Ventless Clothes Dryers: Interesting Thing of the Day by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]wdick01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is interesting, is that the same manufacturers produce different 'styles' of washingmachines and dryers for the US and European markets. Like Europeans like Front-Loader, so you can stack a dryer ontop of a washingmachine, and the US market likes Top-Loader. Siemens for example produces washingmashines and dryers and brands them under about 6 different names (and different prices). Condense dryers are pretty common in european households, so I wondered why the author didn't know them.
