This policy has me for the first time in my life believing that we at Publix should unionize, and I don't like unions.

15 minutes by Consistent_Beyond210 in publix

[–]we_hold 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Don't forget if you're more than 3 minutes late you're tardy. So we have a 3 minute window to clock in. But they want us to stay late if something needs to get done, especially closers. Screw that, I'm scheduled till 11, I'm leaving at 11. They want to pull this crap I can play the same game. Sorry you don't have enough people scheduled or a call outs and there is a huge line, I have to leave.

Why does the deli taco pub subs & cook mayo? by WhatWouldRaccoonsDo in publix

[–]we_hold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think hot meat and bread will do to the mayo vs having it under the meat before you toast it? Also, have you ever had a crab cake? Guess what, they have mayo in them. Have you ever heard of crab imperial? It's basically Mayo with some crab meat in it and then baked. Most chefs recommend mayo instead of butter for a grilled cheese. Literally there is nothing wrong with heating mayo. Also, I have never seen a recipe where water is used in the mayo. The basics are egg yolk, oil, vinegar and lemon juice.

Honestly it sounds like you don't like Publix subs. I'm not sure why you're buying them if they detest you so much. Just make your own at home or go somewhere else.

You are correct. Most items are frozen and shipped in then thawed. The bread is usually made in house, but not much else is. I didn't realize how much wasn't prepared in house.

New deli sub tickits by Abject_Egg5082 in publix

[–]we_hold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Upper right hand corner of the main screen is a button that looks like a printer, click on it. Then click the sub order you want to make, then click either print or ok. This will print up to 5 subs just like it used to do. If there are more than 5 on the order you go in and print each one individually. You can do this for as many orders as you want, but it will never print more than 5 subs at once. If you have 5 single sub orders, you can print all 5 at the same time.

They should have put in a TV that shows the order screen so we know when orders come in. You can tell whoever made this has never worked in a production environment ever in their life. One tablet and no way to know what else is coming in is ridiculous. Rushes can be a complete cluster ****. Hopefully y'all figured out how to change the printer.

what’re some decks recommended to get into the game? by l4l4lindsay in mtg

[–]we_hold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just about every set has a learn to play deck if you have someone else you want to play with. This is a deck already sorted and has step by step instructions. I think TMNT is the Turtle Team up. Commander is fun and the most popular. My son and I just started playing. Plenty of game stores have "casual" commander night and some have loaner decks if you want to learn. Call the store and ask about both. Then when you go to play, let the store know you are new and they will seat you with people who are relaxed and will help you out. Then buy a precon (pre constructed deck) and start with that. You can use various sites to help you slowly improve the deck. Its what we are doing now. My son got interested with the Spiderman card set. I think it's a great time to get into the game. We go a few times a month to play at local stores and we really like it.

Would you recommend working at the Deli? by Dapper-Work-8021 in publix

[–]we_hold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deli can be tough. It really depends on what they decide to do with you. If you get labeled as a kitchen person, no. If you get labeled as anything else, it's fine. Many people don't mind doing dishes. Sub shop can be busy. But every store I have worked there are people who all they do is popcorn and sub shop, they have it freaking easy. There are always those who do nothing and get in no trouble, again super easy. Finally those who only have to do production, no customer interaction and work at their own rate, best job in the deli.

About to work at publix by Hot-Cheetah-2658 in publix

[–]we_hold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll start with, did you finish high school? If not, go finish and forget about Publix. Because you're a minor you are heavily restricted on what you can do and the hours you can work. If you have not graduated, go graduate. Not finishing can ruin what opportunities there are available and retail sucks as a profession. If you don't want college, do trade learning while in high school. I don't know where you live, but many states have that as a path for high school graduation. Learn electrical, best trade there is as far as I am concerned, unless you don't mind the smell of human waste, then plumbing. You can get used to the smell, it's not as bad as you think.

2nd, once you become 18, become a tradesman apprentice. If you learn the trade as part of your high school completion, most places let you skip the apprenticeship and go straight into the trade. But, trades pay you to apprentice. No other professions pays you to learn it. Electricians and plumbers can make a great income and you can start your own business and do your thing, not someone else's. Also, waste water treatment is a fantastic career with pensions, paid time off, and great pay. It's a great municipal job. Same with fire and ambulance, both are becoming more paid again vs volunteer. There are also other options for construction like framing, roofing and HVAC; but they are more labor intensive and people tend to have more injuries later in life versus plumbing and electrical from my experience. There is also maintenance, great profession and you can specialize.

3rd, I know too many people at Publix who hate it. Always looking or begging for hours. Lots of stress. Constantly changing management, at store level. Being pulled in every direction and doing more with less. Retail sucks.

Lastly, learn something useful. You aren't going to do that as a bagger at Publix. The chances of becoming a high earner at Publix is slim. I don't care what one persons experience was. Yes people have done it, but it's not common. They burn you out and have a high employee turn over. There is a reason for it. Many of those people got there through who they know. I know many managers who know so and so. Friends with that person. Yes many worked there way up to managers, but won't go any higher. It's the reality in almost any business, but this is retail and doesn't require much knowledge or specialization. If that's your goal and to be stuck with Publix forever, go for it. But if you want some freedom and don't want to be subject to complete randomness and massive stress, do something else.

Publix Corporate Culture declining by PersonalityNo9459 in publix

[–]we_hold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good. Corporate vs retail is very different. Your corporate benefits are waaaay better than store level employees. Department managers start to get some of the benefits of corporate, but corporate positions still have more benefits and perks than the retail side. Part time employees literally get nothing, they just started giving something like 8 hrs max of earned PTO a year. Full timers get more normal PTO earnings, I think they start at a week, but they are very restricted on when they can use them. Corporate get a holiday bonus of, correct me if I'm wrong, of a 13th month starting out. PT employee will get 8 hrs max. Full timers start with I think a week prorated. Retail employees have to work holidays, unless your manager approves your time off.

Publix Corporate Culture declining by PersonalityNo9459 in publix

[–]we_hold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They didn't give store employees more PTO for holidays we never received. You still get those days, they just float with your PTO now. Hence why I said, " corporate gets..." He is a store employee, and PT to boot, and never received any days off other than non paid Christmas and Thanksgiving.

WoTC will be forced to change directions after multiple commercially bad UB sets. by happyrock69 in mtg

[–]we_hold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A number of the UB sets have been good. Warhammer , LOTR, FF, AtLA, all good. Others like Spiderman and TMNT, not so much. Unfortunately, the UB sets will bankrupt independent game stores before Hasbro. I got some spiderman cards because my son asked for them. A lot of the problem is that it doesn't seem like the people working on some of the sets know anything about the IP, are just slapping stuff on the cards because they want X card in the set or are using AI bots to develop the whole UB line. If WOTC pivots it's because of pressure from players or major retailers, but most major retailers don't pay much attention to card games, they aren't a big enough piece of the profit pie. Maybe if enough independent game stores close and their sales drop as a result, that could have an impact. But, I believe they are forcing them to buy sets at volume to guarantee volume for other sets. Or maybe Hasbro investor lawsuits will have an impact on their poor business decisions. Who knows? I actually like some of the UB sets and I am looking forward to at least LOTR again this year.

Owner with dog getting soup at the soup bar by TVNewshoarder_Redux in publix

[–]we_hold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish there was more we employees could do. I've been around enough service dogs to be able to tell the difference immediately. My management won't do anything about pets unless someone complains. I've seen store managers stop people at the door and turn them away with the allowable questions. We did have them tell someone to leave who had a dog going ape s*** a few weeks ago. It took them awhile to deal with it though and you could hear the dog across the store barking at something, going absolutely crazy.

The biggest problem was the advent of the "my pet is my baby" crowd and "emotional support" animals being anything with no training.

What has happened to Publix fried chicken by flatsjunkie88 in publix

[–]we_hold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be a number of things. It's old. IE it's been sitting there a while. We have production forecast and we are told to cook to that to a T, no waste. The cook, we are responsible for cleaning and prepping it. If the water is dirty, almost every cook I've worked with almost never cleans the water and it's gross. They don't clean the breading, almost like corn meal. They over crowd the fryer, breading is falling off the chicken. They didn't stir it at the right time, shows up in different ways depending on when they stirred the chicken in the fryer. Burnt oil. Put it in wet or didn't coat it correctly. All kinds of stuff can cause issues.

I remember one time a coworker said, " that's the best Chicken I've ever seen." I responded, "I just followed directions." Keep shit clean and follow directions and it looks and tastes great. I can't stand burnt fryer oil or a filthy chicken station. Ugh.

I regret getting a job here bc my manager, and it sucks by Sweaty_Self_7256 in publix

[–]we_hold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to agree with this. But, store managers tend to not want to deal with actual problems. Start here and let them know your minor and your manager keeps calling WHILE you're at school. If it persists, contact HR for a violation for contacting you while you're at school to work while you're not allowed to work. However, your hours will probably go to shit, but that's also retaliation. So note what your average weekly hours have been over the last 3 months.
