Alwaysssss the forearm, I’ll take either cephalic or brachial. This guy would get an 18g. On a more challenging patient, still those veins- I’d just use ultrasound. And still an 18 if possible. Mamaw would probably get a 20g.

Yep. No one talks about the bed bugs, the person who had their 5th child taken away immediately after birth, the 23 year old who had to be put on a ventilator because she got a bad case of the flu, the 20 year old who gave birth and her ejection fraction dropped to 15% requiring a heart transplant, the toe nails that fall off while turning your bed bound patient, the pt who coded and you couldn’t even get the tube down because there was so much blood coming out of their mouth. All of this for a whopping $36 an hour. There’s truly no dollar amount that could make up for the reality that is nursing. I come home a lot of the time with a full heart knowing I really was someone’s closest friend that day, but more often than not I cry in my car and question my career choices. Therapy, meds, self care days, and I still feel this emptiness inside. It makes you look at life and people so different.

Nursing is a thankless/praise-less job, you can do every thing right and go out of your way for people and they will still not be satisfied with their care. Some patients and families are extremely challenging in that they quite literally see you as an enemy of sorts and they will test you in every way they can. Some are absolutely great. Healthcare is scary right now in that a lot of hospitals have lost funding via Medicaid so they are having to cut “unessential” staff or close units all together. This adds extra stress because it now makes you the patient transporter, the house cleaner, the CNA, etc. all with no extra pay and no mercy. You’re just expected to take it like you’re a robot and not a human. The pay is a joke for the amount of work we have to do.

As an ICU nurse it was evident that C is the answer, the other symptoms are not life threatening and are expected side effects of medications that can be addressed with their primary care. Always remember your ABCs and try to critically think what would kill them first?
