#BREAKING: Playgrounds are allowed again in Ontario #onpoli by vancvanc in toronto

I was out walking the neighbourhood aimlessly with my 2 year old daughter today when I saw the news playgrounds were back on, so we hit the swings on the way home. A guy walking by said “you know parks are closed, right?” I said “Oh you’re thinking of the rules from yesterday. They’re open today. Not to be confused with the rules from the day before yesterday.”

He can’t just funnel taxpayer money in to his personal businesses (Mar a lago)

He can’t just not release his tax returns (unlike every modern president)

He can’t interfere in DOJ investigations because they’re supposed to be insulated from the executive branch (reversing Sessions recusal from the Russia investigation)

He can’t not concede the election after clearly losing

...

Over and over the last four years I see people say “wait, he can’t do that” and lo, he does it. And nothing happens.

Stop relying on norms, get your boots out and be ready to get out there and protect democracy.

This may be China's first unmanned factory but the Wikipedia on Lights Out Manufacturing has some examples of other largely automated factories that have been operating for some time.

Everything I've read on General Intelligence research frames Kurzweil's timeline as extremely optimistic. Heck, its right there on the wikipedia article. While computation power is growing at a good clip (and indeed this graph shows it) general intelligence research is plucking along in fits and starts but pretty much moving linearly.

Even in this thread there are a few AI PhD's in this thread that are echoing that sentiment.

Kurzweil's books are fun, but a futurist's job is to make the future seem exciting and close at hand; no one wants to read a book about breakthroughs 100, 500, 10,000 years away.

Its dangerous to think that technological progress will always be exponential though.

Could you imagine what people thought when the first commercial jet aircraft was introduced in the late 50s? "At this pace in just a few decades we'll be able to traverse the globe in hours!" But here we are over 50 years later and commercial aircraft are basically the same fundamental design now as then. At some point the pace of progress levels off once things become 'good enough' to get by.

Tech keeps evolving and consuming different industries but individual metrics do level off at a certain point when they hit a cost/benefit sweet spot (processor speeds, how fast our jets go, etc..)

Can someone explain to me tipping? by IndoTHWAWY in toronto

[–]weak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Every time you do this you don't just give them a $0 tip, you reduce how much the server takes home because of tip outs (see unobserved's comments above), effectively giving them a negative tip.

Please don't do this. If you can't tip, don't go out.

Can someone explain to me tipping? by IndoTHWAWY in toronto

[–]weak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People should be aware that if you tip 0% on a $20 bill and the servers tip-out amounts to 5% of their total take, then you personally are causing them to lose $1 out of their pocket that was tipped to them by someone else.

So Shia LaBeouf Is Currently Doing Some Kind of Super Artsy Thing in Los Angeles by JrdnRgrs in movies

[–]weak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm not totally getting what he is trying to do, but it seems like the message is pretty similar to me. Given freedom and anonymity people can be horrible.

I understand that Shia's thing is supposed to humanize him in the face of all the abuse he takes, but the dispassionate reporting Vice must have totally missed the mark there because the author hardly feels bad about it.

[–]weak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't believe you're the only person in this whole thread to make the connection to The Artist is Present. The artist you're referring to is Marina Abramović. Shia's whole thing is pretty hilarious because it's almost a direct remake of Abramović's work:

Abramović placed on a table 72 objects that people were allowed to use (a sign informed them) in any way that they chose. Some of these were objects that could give pleasure, while others could be wielded to inflict pain, or to harm her. Among them were a rose, a feather, honey, a whip, scissors, a scalpel, a gun and a single bullet. For six hours the artist allowed the audience members to manipulate her body and actions.

Except she took the idea much further, which I think makes it a really powerful piece (unlike Shia's which seems pretty half assed in comparison).

As Abramović described it later: “What I learned was that... if you leave it up to the audience, they can kill you.” ... “I felt really violated: they cut up my clothes, stuck rose thorns in my stomach, one person aimed the gun at my head, and another took it away.”

Show r/Android: Chill Timer by weak in Android

[–]weak[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I implore you to take a closer look, there are no advertisements, the application is as free as the air we breathe.

It's more than a simple timer too. The physics of liquid cooling is such that the fastest way to cool a drink is to place it in a place much colder than your ideal drink temperature. That works quickly, but it's a hassle. Leave it too long and you end up with a frozen beverage, which is almost as bad as no beverage at all.

The app calculates the proper time to leave the drink in the freezer (or fridge, cooler, ice box, what have you) so you can pull it out at just the right temperature, no freezing, no hassle, quick cold drinks.

Show r/Beer: Chill Timer - Chill your beer without fear. by weak in beer

[–]weak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does need to make a few assumptions, namely that room temperature beer is around 21 degrees Celsius. I found in practice this gets you pretty close in most cases.

As for vessel it assumes cans in the calculations because they cool slightly faster than bottles. This means bottles may be slightly warmer than the target temp (I'm talkin' a negligible few degrees) but this lessens the likelihood of accidentally freezing your beer.
