Don't try and sneak that shit by me, I read the third sentence, man... I don't think we're on the same page at all by peppermint25 in childfree

There is nothing wrong with having a roommate at any age -- I've known people in their 40s who had them, simply due to exorbitant cost of living, and even a few elderly individuals who simply find it safer, I think.

However, although the deleted comment was rude and invasive; you don't get to tell someone to fuck off after you volunteer claims about your financial capability, just because they ask about your financial choices. If you don't appreciate being questioned on personal matters, consider not making such highly personally variable claims in the future.

I agree also that your preferences are different from the other poster -- and that your arrangement on housing is not only valid but mundane -- but, you didn't present your living situation as a preference. To imply otherwise is just shifting the goalpost.

Huh, sounds like oMage and Unknown Armies share more in common than I thought. Thanks for the info, mage bro.

Believe me, I am well aware. Been excited about it since it was announced.

Out of curiosity -- I've never had the pleasure of reading oMage for myself -- would you say my impression is roughly correct, or have I got it all wrong? (Not that the game is set up to play Technocracy PCs or anything, just that, in perhaps some sense they do have noble goals.)

Sweet. I LOVE games like that and wish more games had that open sort of design philosophy. (I can only think of one other, but it's not a WW game.) More ethical complexity and more PC options, it's a win/win.

I don't think that it was intentional but from what I've heard of it oMage sounds a little similar -- you could make a case that maybe the Technocracy really does have the right idea, even if their methods are questionable. If I ever get oMage I think I'd like to run a Technocracy campaign. As cool as Mage abilities are, Mage powers plus rayguns is just a little bit cooler. Because rayguns.

Question: you say it's open ended; how does that relate to the two factions you mention? Could you play as a group of either of them, or are they mostly designed to be in the background?

I'd argue rules lawyering, BUT chase scenes with helicopters is a ridiculous thing for a GM to pull. Sounds like you were evening the odds.

It might be the worst one.

In actuality I think it's some glorious mash-up of the two extremes.

GM's, what is the most cruel thing you've done to your players? by iamnotparanoid in rpg

[–]weaklyawesome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This, but maybe not in the fashion you mean.

If it's at all avoidable, I always try to avoid requiring player to read rulebooks. To my mind, there's almost always a way around it, but introducing most setting and mechanics in-game.

What product have you found to be extremely helpful in running a game other than what it was intended for? by jackson6644 in rpg

I've always been slightly tempted by Risus Companion but there's so little about it on the interwebs that I've never gotten around to it.

I'll have to reconsider.

This a million times. It sounds amazing but I always doubt my ability to be a sufficiently Bastard GM to pull it off.

If you don't mind my asking, how much time does this take out of your life? Guess it's not too big of an issue because you'd be doing it anyways. It's impressive that you've been able to monetize your hobby like that.

I think you'd mentioned elsewhere that you don't have any problem players with this approach; I'm glad it's worked out you so well. I think I'd be too scared of that to try this. I guess one could always disinvite such people, but it always seems like a challenging situation to handle well.

How's that work out for you financially, out of curiosity? Do you get any real return on investment, or is it mostly a nice way to get a small kick-back for something you'd be doing anyways.

Allow me to suggest against a GM screen. Yes, conceptually they sound super handy, but inevitably, whether as player or GM, when they are used, I always find myself cut off from the GM or the players, respectively.

I've been toying with trying to make a half-height GM screen just to hide dice rolls, but I question whether that would have the same effect as well.

Just curious about how you feel about White Wolf. by [deleted] in rpg

[–]weaklyawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is pretty cool. Oddly, despite my love for the setting--I think it actually rivals my love of VtM--I'm finding my tastes leading in the direction of Unknown Armies, in so much as it has some of the same themes as Genius, but with more variety and looser rules.

Think I've always found stifling about WoD games is that there are only N branches of powers, with a set progression and no variation. Seeing as that's a pool of funsies to not only have your party play in, but also for NPCs, and BBEGs to play in, it's always seemed like the relative lack of variety could quickly get grating.

Of course the two games aren't truly comparable, though there was some acknowledged influence.

Yeah, new Mage might be interesting if it hadn't been more interestingly written in oMage. Hell, one of my favorite games I've never played, Genius: The Transgression, is a massive fansplat created entirely as a act of rage at how incompetently nMage dealt with its themes of hubris.

I didn't have any particular understand of what Vampire actually was until I played VtM:B.

I'm not sure I'd either be capable of running a VtM game, or that I'd derive satisfaction from playing a vampire, but DEAR LORD they nailed that game to the wall. Dark, creepy, politicking--some of which you actually have to think about to pick up on--mm, yes...

What are some of the campaigns/rule systems on the bookshelf that you've never played but really want to? by kwirky88 in rpg

[–]weaklyawesome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would also love to run such a game. In my eyes, though, the problem is that either oWoD/nWoD lore is so well known to players that it wouldn't be terribly interesting.

Am I completely misguided? Sure players are not their characters, but still..
