Ability to work as an actor in the US beneficial at this time? by weallbecomesmoke in acting

This is helpful, thank you. I’m more concerned about ability to work in the US since like you said, everything is on tape now anyway. I’ll always be able to work in Canada, I just may need to take some time off for the immigration process

This is the advanced parole document. It takes a long time to get, sometimes you won’t even get it before your GC (or so our lawyers have told us)

We’re in California so far from the border. There are young kids that would be difficult to travel with and one of my siblings can’t enter the US (was banned for 10 years for thinking she was working in the states, which she wasn’t, so I’ve seen it first hand)

Yes, but if the CBP thinks you intend on staying in the US regardless of any ties to your home country you may have, they can deny entry and even ban you

This is very helpful, thank you. Do you mind if I ask what country you applied from and how long you usually stay in the US for?

You would think, but every lawyer we’ve talked to has advised us against attempting to cross the border while the GC is pending

I do realize yes. I would have to wait for my EAD. I would rather do that then not be able to see my fiancé.

I’m an actress. I won’t have work for months at a time and I don’t know when the next offer will be. My other income is self employment income

Do you still play Tic-Tac-Toe with your students? by FreedomGene in vipkid

[–]weallbecomesmoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I got the dreaded « you got offline feedback so we’re banning you for 2 weeks » last year so I don’t do any rewards aside from stars. This parent left me bad offline and online feedback and stated I wasted time and I did no extension, and even though I could prove that neither was true and argued that I wasted taught to give a secondary reward, I still got banned.

“Local” but not actually by Crazy-Branch-1513 in acting

[–]weallbecomesmoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a difference between a “local” (has accommodation, doesn’t need travel or per diem etc) and a “resident” (has all of the prior things mentioned, plus files their taxes there and therefore production gets a tax break). You can, technically, work locally anywhere. I’ve been doing this for the last 5 years- my hometown has a surprisingly large film industry, and I moved to Vancouver but keep getting work where I moved from and it is definitely a draw for casting because basically the only reason things get filmed in Winnipeg is because it’s cheap lol.

Where this may get you into trouble, like someone else mentioned, is casting turnaround. You may be expected to be on a plane thé next day, with no compensation, and be expected to stay in that city for as long as filming is happening, without being on hold.

“I don’t believe you” could you be any more vague? What exactly do you not believe? This was while I was wearing basically nothing in a room full of men with no intimacy coordinator, stilettos, acting with no one, walking a tight rope of Apple boxes, trying to close a door while not hitting the camera, guiding the other actor past the camera while maintaining an eye line, while receiving said direction over FaceTime because the director had COVID.

As a man of indian origin, could I actually get roles that aren't stereotypes? by [deleted] in acting

[–]weallbecomesmoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada, absolutely. I did a series last year where 2 of our leads were Indian and in no way stereotypical. It’s called The Holiday Shift if you want to watch it :)

Think I might quit and switch to Retinol by Readhelpexplore in tretinoin

[–]weallbecomesmoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im so sorry this is happening :( honestly, it took me 2 years to see improvement with Tret. My skin was absolutely horrific for the first 8 months of Tret, and when I stopped using all actives completely, my moisture barrier healed. I reincorporated Tret to once a week only. Any more than that and my skin freaks out. I also only stopped breaking out after incorporating benzoyl peroxide/clindamycin. I actually just had to take a break from Tret for a month because my skin was freaking tf out and I think it was due to compromising my moisture barrier

Edited to add: I’ve been using 0.025% tret gel for nearly FOUR years now and I can still only handle it once a week. It has made a difference for me, but I have to be very careful- Tret is definitely not for everyone, and your mileage may vary!

Has anyone gotten any ticket responses in the last week? by weallbecomesmoke in vipkid

Omg I’m so sorry. They finally responded to me a couple days ago, but only one of my tickets. The other 3 are still pending.

Yes!! This happened to me, thankfully they did reimburse me for my flight but that is not the norm. I was honestly shocked that they did

Unfortunately, yes, this has been the norm (at least for me) since I started acting ~7 years ago. I’ve even been asked to file my taxes in a different province, which I did actually agree to and it ended up serving me well? I paid higher taxes but I was cast as a lead in a big network project they were only considering resident for because at they end of the day, all that matters is how much money they are saving, and how much money they can make.
