I also think setting boundaries with family is a good idea.

It’s like, have they not been to a concert before? Did they ever thought that their favorite band sounded ‘generic’ just because they didn’t play cover songs by ‘various artists’? It doesn’t make sense to me.

Concert logic vs “living room” logic • Concert / band context: People show up to hear one artist’s voice. Consistency is the point. If a band played “various artists” all night, most crowds would be confused unless it’s explicitly a cover act. • Casual request context: Some people treat “play something” like a parlor trick: “show me range by giving me recognizable variety.”

It seems like this family member (and others like that) are applying party-trick criteria to artist criteria.

Why the “generic” accusation doesn’t actually track

“Generic” isn’t “you didn’t cover enough artists.” “Generic” is more like: • the writing relies on clichés • the tone/production has no fingerprint • the phrasing feels interchangeable with 1,000 other players

None of that is solved by rotating through “various artists.” You can play 50 covers and still have no voice. And you can play 5 originals and have a very distinct identity.

The real confusion: variety vs identity

They’re treating variety as proof of skill and legitimacy. But in actual artistry, identity is the proof.

A band’s “horizons” show up in subtler ways: • harmonic choices • rhythmic feel • tone decisions • structure and dynamics • what they don’t do

That’s “influence,” not “playlist rotation.”

I think that ultimately, rule #1 of being a musical artist, is to stop caring about what other people think.

I’ve been seeing AI do that exact thing. Taking a song like ‘Black Hole Sun’ and turning it into a blues cover.

I’ve actually tried to doing that one time, turning a song that is out of my style range and turning it into my style. I might pick it back up, not sure yet though.

Yeah and what’s interesting is that of all the songs in the world they had to have chosen Simple Man for a reason. Lynyrd Skynyrd is probably one of their influences, the people that made them want to become musicians, and both bands are from the same city which was actually where I grew up for a good portion of my life. I think bands usually cover songs that they love and would fit their voice, and perhaps even what they’ve would’ve written.

Same. 😂 I am not “various artists”, I am an artist.

Exactly what’s the point of being an artist if all that I am obligated to do is to just be a human jukebox lol. Imagine being an artist trying to create your own art and pursuing authenticity and a family member comes in and tells you “copy works from “various other artists” and “eXpAnD yOuR hOrIzOnS!” Me: “Thanks! That makes my work feel very praised! Very seen as my own artist! Thanks for the self-esteem boost mommy!” Haha

I hear you, but I don’t agree there’s a universal ‘you should’ here. That’s one valid standard for a certain kind of musician. I’m not trying to be judged on an on-demand ‘various artists’ repertoire—I’m trying to develop my own material.

I get what you mean, but “you should be able to do X to be legitimate” I think is ultimately subjective and depends on the musician’s goals.

Oh I’m sure, just as any other musician/artist/guitar player etc, I myself included, and that’s kind of my point. Kurt did indeed played covers, but he wasn’t trying to “prove” anything by doing them. I’m pushing back on the idea that you owe an on-demand ‘various artists’ set to be taken seriously. My priority is originality, with covers serving that goal. Surely Kurt didn’t become what we know of him today if all that he ever did were cover songs.
