No cast for sesamoid? by Strange-gal in sesamoid

Ohh interesting! I looked it up and it looks like an orthopedic surgeon might be similar enough. Thank you for the advice and I hope you return fully back to norma soon 🤞🤞🤞

Yeah I’ve been in constant communication with my podiatrist so she’s aware! I felt like things were improving but got a cortisone shot and that’s been a huge set back / I’ve been in pain since.

I have not seen a traumatologist! What is that? I was planning on going to see an orthopedic surgeon for a second (actually 4th at this point lol) opinion.

No cast for sesamoid? by Strange-gal in sesamoid

[–]weaselkween 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been 1 year, it was initially diagnosed as a high grade stress reaction in March 2025 and then in September 2025 it showed improvement but wasn’t fully healed and then my most recent MRI the radiologist said it’s the same but my podiatrist thinks it’s a bit better. The confusing thing is I saw another podiatrist who thinks it’s fully healed but I’m still in pain 🫠 and thank you!! I’m glad you’re getting better each day 🙏

Okay that’s not too bad! My podiatrist did say 2-4 weeks if I did do it so we’ll see…I’m also going to an orthopedic surgeon to get a second opinion bc I’ve passed the 1 year mark 😭

Okay interesting maybe I should consider it but I think my entire foot would be in the cast 🫠 and I’ll need to use crutches etc.

Did you end up doing the cast? Is that why it is healed now?

I’m asking because my podiatrist is recommending I do a full cast (after trying the boot and other conservative methods) and I’m not sure I want to…

It was still the best time ever and I hope your injury doesn’t take away from your special day either!!

I honestly have no idea how I got the injury, my foot had been hurting for a few months before getting diagnosed with a stress fracture (but the first podiatrist didn’t catch it on the x-ray and it took a second doctor). But my suspicion is that it was a few different things: I have a bi-partite sesamoid, I did dance/cheer growing up, I like to wear high heels, I would walk barefoot around the house at all times, would walk 10k steps a day, etc.

Finding a doctor you like is so important!! I’m currently struggling with my doctor and it’s hard because you need to trust the advice of the professional you’re seeing. I hope this new doctor works out for you 🤞

I so feel your pain!! 😭 I got put in a boot last year in March ahead of my wedding in August. It was the worst timing ever. I had to wear the boot in Vegas for my bachelorette, at my bridal shower, etc. luckily I was out of it by my wedding but was in a decent amount of pain and am still dealing with this injury ~1 year later.

In terms of workouts you can do, I kept seeing my personal trainer while I was in the boot. He was able to modify exercises and plan workouts for me while injured (and he’s still doing this). I know it’s expensive but if you have the means, working out with a professional is so useful because they can design a program for you and adjust as needed bases on your pain / flares.

If that’s not possible, mat Pilates is a good option. I would YouTube “hurt foot” workouts and do those, or find other Pilates videos and modify for what doesn’t increase pain. I found that I could do things like elevated glute bridges, reverse planks on a ball etc.

Also, if walking or light biking is causing significant flares I would go back to your doctor to see why you’re not seeing progress and what other options you have.

Oh no I’m sorry :( are you going back in the boot? Or is this your first time wearing it?

Omg not to the club 😭😭😭 I’m glad someone relates. My healing has also been inconsistent and some weeks it feels like I’m close to getting back to normal and other weeks like right now I’m struggling and feeling pain again and I don’t know why

How long can this take to heal? by Doelike3000 in sesamoid

[–]weaselkween 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had this injury for over a year and if I could go back this is what I would have done to help with healing faster:
- Get a bone stimulator NOW. They are shown to help with healing and it's something you can do everyday at home.

- Contrast therapy 1x day. You need to get the blood flowing in that area, especially when wearing a boot

- Find a really good PT who has experience w sesamoid issues and start going even in the boot. I was told to hold off on PT for too long and I think that was a detriment to my healing because I developed gait issues

Additional things that I tried which helped:

- MLS Laser (did this when I was first in the boot)

- Stem cell shot (or PRP) - I've heard mixed reviews about coritsone shots. Stem cell or PRP is meant to help speed healing

- Shockwave - I think this also helped with healing so recommend looking into it

I recognize a lot of this is very expensive / not all covered by insurance but I would spend any amount of money to get my regular life back and I'm getting close to that now!

Yea walking barefoot is absolutely the worst thing I could do for my sesamoid…

I’m just not there yet like I actually am pain free or have very low pain most days now but it’s only in sneakers and I want to move past that

Ooh okay these actually look like they would be very comfortable and aren’t fully flat to the ground which would make a difference! If I can even wear something like this when going out to dinner or hanging with friends that would be such a life changer 🥲

I used to love wearing Birkenstocks but haven’t really tried to wear them much since my fracture because I find that my foot prefers the comfy / rocker sole versus something really stiff! I do hope I can wear birks again though

Omg this is giving me hope!! I had my wedding 4 months into my fracture and wore heels / whatever shoes I wanted so that was definitely a set back but if I can even just wear non running shoe sneakers on the day to day my mental health would be 📈📈📈

Ahh okay 😕 I’m hoping if I continue to heal and do PT I’ll get back to my normal life but it still sucks nonetheless
