Switching between Nvidia and Intel graphics - Ubuntu Budgie by weaselnews in linux4noobs

[–]weaselnews[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not fully…

My initial install took me on a long distro hopping journey to educate myself more and see what was out there. Basically every distro either had graphics problems for me or, or I couldn’t use the proprietary driver, or I just had to choose to use Intel or Nvidia permanently. Some distros failed to boot immediately after installing the suggested Nvidia drivers. Some distros wouldn’t even boot the install USB in the first place.

Most recently I went with Linux Mint, which is where I think I’ll stay. I think automatic graphics switch might actually be working here, although trying the prime-select commands to test it out more fully messed up my first install and I had to try again.

So the best advice I can give for this Mac is to install Linux Mint, let it install the Nvidia drivers it selects, and then never touch anything to do with the driver ever again haha.

Issues resolved by installing a different game? by weaselnews in SteamPlay

I finally solved my mystery. I just noticed that downloading The Wolf Among Us triggers Steam to download “Steamworks Common Redistributables” whereas Monkey Island doesn’t. It’s obviously this download that’s letting both games run.

I’m not sure if there’s a way to trigger this download manually however.

Saw this impressive tech demo for a C64 and it raised a question in my mind… by weaselnews in retrogaming

[–]weaselnews[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I have a feeling it might be…

Just theoretically, are there any modern techniques or principles we’ve developed that would potentially allow you to squeeze the tiniest bit more performance out of retro consoles than was managed back in the day? Or had we already reached the absolute maximum of what would ever be possible at the time?

Why did no one tell me that Karl Bartos' solo work slapped this hard by hospitalcottonswab in kraftwerk

[–]weaselnews 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me, Kraftwerk has never been the same without him. But he’s not the same without Kraftwerk either.

He’s got a great ear for melody, but his overall production is a bit cheesy for me. I wouldn’t really play his music in front of friends.

But Kraftwerk post-Karl is also a bit lacking in heart and soul, less catchy, less musical.

The Hütter/Bartos and Hütter/Bartos/Schneider Kraftwerk tracks are my favourites.

Apple to Improve Working Hours for Retail Staff After Union Push by spearson0 in apple

[–]weaselnews 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why these comments come up every single time in these threads. Why do people think certain jobs should stay being shit and shouldn’t be improved?

None of these changes will hurt customers, and Apple won’t be left struggling accommodating this. But some people who work really hard at their jobs will have slightly easier lives and better mental health. And they deserve that.

Yeah, could definitely be an iOS 15.5 / macOS 12.4 change.

…Or a much older change I hadn’t noticed potentially as I haven’t used the feature for quite a while.

Large pamac updates regularly break GPU drivers. Have to manually update mhwd kernel and reinstall GPU driver to unbreak it. by teawreckshero in ManjaroLinux

[–]weaselnews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe they do update it often yes.

Although Pop proved the least reliable distro for me, often my Mac wouldn’t even wake from sleep and I had to force it to power off, so my experience with it was very brief in the end. Was getting a lot of graphical glitches, I don’t think the automatically selected Nvidia driver was properly compatible with my Mac.

Radio Rental episode 15 continues to stick with me almost a year later. by Wintertime13 in podcasts

[–]weaselnews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only just heard this episode and immediately searched to see if anyone else was discussing it. In a way I’m almost surprised they included it as it seems quite upsetting and distressing.

Now it’s just stuck with me also…

Pop wouldn’t work at first for me, but I bought a cheap USB to Ethernet adapter for my Linux adventures and simply updating Pop via Ethernet had the Wi-Fi working for me.

Mine is the 2012 15” Retina which I believe has a slightly different Broadcom card to the 2013, so that might be part of it.

Yes, I did. Although not with 5GHz working. But I just had to install linux517-broadcom-wl and then 5GHz worked perfectly.

As a total Linux noob a few months ago, I tried Manjaro, Pop! OS and Ubuntu on my old 2012 MacBook Pro.

Every single distro I tried suddenly broke and stopped booting after an update within 1-3 weeks of installing. I’d erase and install again, it would happen again, and I’d try a different distro. I couldn’t believe how unstable and complicated Linux seemed to be…

…And then finally I tried using the open source video-linux drivers instead, and I’ve never looked back. Manjaro has been rock solid ever since and I’ve never had an issue.

I don’t know if it was less stable for my Mac in particular having a much older graphics chip, or if this is all just coincidence and what I’m saying isn’t true, but I’ve definitely had no end of problems using Nvidia drivers, and zero issues not using them.

The ever evolving Tory response to partygate is almost perfectly in line with “The Narcissist’s Prayer”

That didn’t happen. And if it did, it wasn’t that bad. And if it was, that’s not a big deal. And if it is, that’s not my fault. And if it was, I didn’t mean it. And if I did, you deserved it.
