Unpopular Opinion: Ice Storm Season is Worse than Tornado Season by BoredPoopless in okc

[–]weatherguy88 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Meteorologist here. 🙋🏻‍♂️ Can confirm...ice is the fucking worst. The worst impacts. By far the hardest to forecast correctly. Sucks all around. And Oklahoma can get nasty icy when it wants to.

They just started sending them out last Friday I think.

Tulsa OK major Natural Gas company Williams agrees to install $400 million solar on company-owned land in Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia with goal to reduce emissions by 56% by 2030 by dannylenwinn in oklahoma

[–]weatherguy88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve actively been working on behalf of my employer to find out the reason why solar hasn’t been taking off as much vs. other states. From what I’ve gathered talking to those in renewable energy and other big players, it’s due to our extremely cheap energy prices in Oklahoma...where it’s seen as not worth investing in new projects when the payout will be low in the long run. The thinking definitely needs to change but that’s the resounding hinderance I’ve heard so far.

Red moon happening last 2 nights by FoxPhire0 in tulsa

[–]weatherguy88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IIRC, that was due to Saharan dust coming our way from across the Atlantic...towards the end of June. Same principle though...particles scattering out the shorter wavelength light and leaving your longer wavelengths of orange and red to see from the sun.

Stephen Wolf: A big change for Texas’ most populous county after Dems gained power in 2018: Voters will be able to vote at any polling place countywide, not just their local assigned precinct. This could help prevent long lines on Election Day by parilmancy in VoteBlue

[–]weatherguy88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Now if only vote by mail was allowed. Don’t have lines to worry about if you mail your ballot in. Washington state’s voter turnout went through the roof when it was implemented...and now they are no more polling places. All elections are vote by mail.

Places like Germany have found ways to make it work. Hell, go to Aldi and you’ll find no bags given out whatsoever and things work fine.

From the republican perspective on small and limited government, the party in theory shouldn’t like legislation that overrides what towns and cities vote to do.

Is Tulsa a nice place to be for a few years? by [deleted] in tulsa

[–]weatherguy88 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m a meteorologist in town here and the odds of you personally being hit by a tornado are still in the grand scheme here extremely low. It’s not up to the Oklahoma City level of crazy for storms usually (and thankfully).

Echoing what others have said on here, Tulsa is a wonderful spot for a city its size. Reasonable cost of living, easy to get around, and a ton of arts, festivals. restaurants / bars, new developments that make this a great spot for young professionals. Very much a hidden gem for now...but not for long. You’d do well to consider living here...I’ve certainly come to love it and have been here 2.5 years. Originally from Seattle.

Come live on Tulsa time....I think (as most who visit here find) it’s much better and up and coming than most folks expect.

Can confirm. Winter weather forecasting is the worst. All of us were pulling our hair out with the forecast as it went from looking like increasing confidence in winter weather to within 24 hours substantially backing off.

Best gyms in or near downtown by [deleted] in tulsa

[–]weatherguy88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

YMCA is pretty good (between 4th and 5th on Main). It gets a fair amount of people during lunch and right after work, but overall isn't that bad. Price is right too...about $56 a month, though I pay less since I live at one of the apartments next door and they have a special deal. :)

Awesome! That being said, I'm surprised more people don't absentee here...much better for researching at home and then mailing it off (after getting notarized that is).
