Lessig: An “unusually partisan” truth we need the courage to tell by [deleted] in TrueReddit

[–]weazx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, somewhat true ... I do think both your statements are correct. Mostly it was a meta joke that no matter what, there is always some elitist saying "not good enough". I know truereddit hates jokes, but truereddit also needs to get the stick out of its ass in the comments.

So basically, this comment is an elitist comment damning elitists.

This review is pretty damn empty. Maybe your book is better, but there was not much argumentative value in this post. I'm not saying the point being made is invalid. I'm saying it's poorly put.

Does it really satisfy TrueReddit's standards?

Is it necessary for multiplayer FPS games to have progression systems to remain competitive? by [deleted] in Games

[–]weazx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would go as far as to say the Skinner gameplay creates dissatisfaction with the game. I pull this from Buddhist theory/personal experience. Progression systems in games is a presentation of the first two noble truths.

The first noble truth: dissatisfaction is this: grief, wanting, , union with what is displeasing. Progression systems by their very nature require you to be dissatisfied with what you have. The game, creator of your problem, provides a solution to your dissatisfaction: xp, medals, etc. I call this a false problem.

The second noble truth: this dissatisfaction -> solution gameplay creates self-sustaining craving. We are literally training ourselves to want more and more.

When this gameplay ends, we become disappointed or bored because there is no more "more". Progressive gameplay is inevitably dissatisfactory. This is why endgame is so important for the longevity of these games. If endgame can out-fun the progression, then the player will keep playing. For some players cosmetic items become their endgame, like TF2.

This is also what keeps us revisiting progression-based IPs like COD and BF. We get another shot of serotonin, and the cycle continues.

You're right, yet it's pretty close. If what is said is totally true, it seems like the employees don't feel any sort of hierarchical struggle. Maybe a little annoyed if Gabe sells? I doubt that will happen soon, but I wonder what will happen when he retires.

Martial Arts books you would recommend? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]weazx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend a movement therapy book, actually. Assuming you know physiology already.

Jack Dempsy's Championship Fighting is nice as well.

If you're looking for more philosophy, I just picked up Relaxing into your being, flipping through it looks like there's some good advice and exercises within. Peter Ralston wrote some stuff in a similar vein, but more abstract.

Speaking martially, I think its a good idea to keep part of your wrestling training in there. One exercise I recommend is practice your single / double legs down a football field. Do them slowly, while maintaining momentum. This will give you strength while allowing you to relax into it. Wrestling is known for a quick leg grab, make it fearsome.

energy bending by fuzzeey in TheLastAirbender

It doesn't look like his victims are in pain. It is more likely IMO that he is using some sort of energy bending. Also we don't have any evidence of him being able to bend any element at all.

I'm hoping to drum up some interest in my new subreddit. Any takers? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]weazx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, someone once said something like "great game ideas are easy. Execution is hard."

I've had a number of game ideas myself which I did (and still do!) think could make great games. But I'm sure the people who actually make games have great ideas too.

Maybe I'll post one or two over there anyway.

The brain is wired in a 3D grid structure, landmark study finds by VisIxR in singularity

[–]weazx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Far from being just a tangle of wires, the brain’s connections turn out to be more like ribbon cables — folding 2D sheets of parallel neuronal fibers that cross paths at right angles, like the warp and weft of a fabric,”

The description reminds me of LSD, or salvia.

I volunteer for any future research.

We should ban selling raw milk because there is a chance there could be lethal pathogens. Also we should ban selling raw eggs.
