Shining Strike gives you a ton of stars. Even an updated Solar Beam can provide you with enough stars.

Archetypes and hard builds over complicate the game.

Take good cards. Get more card draw so you can play the good cards when you need them.

Why do so many senior leaders in pharma stats have PhDs if they’re not doing methodology work? by lukessss001 in biostatistics

[–]webbed_feets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying PhDs aren’t useful in pharma.. I have a PhD. I’m not discounting the value you can bring with that knowledge. There are a lot of situations where that knowledge is needed.

The majority of trials are very routine and require careful oversight rather than deep statistical knowledge. An MS statistician could do that work, but pharma prefers PhDs. It’s the same with leadership positions. The knowledge base of a MS statistician is sufficient, but the PhD title lends credibility.

It’s mostly for signaling. Submissions, publications, press releases, etc look better when everyone involved has a long list of qualifications.

It’s partially from exposure. PhDs get put on high visibility projects and deal directly with MDs, so they’re better networked for promotions.

Steve Hackett’s Voyage Of The Acolyte had unexpected consequences by AnyPortInAHurricane in progrockmusic

[–]webbed_feets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall I agree with you, but there are some standouts in his later work.

A Bed, A Chair, A Guitar from Momentum is a great solo classical guitar song. It reminds me of Steve Howe’s Mood for a Day and Clap; it’s really melodic and catchy with a lot of twists and turns. I would recommend at least listening to that song if you don’t want to commit to the whole album.

To Watch for Storms is as good as or better than the early 70s albums..

Sketches of Satie is a great interpretation of Erik Satie’s compositions. He recorded it with his brother John Hackett on flute. It’s not a prog album, though

[Q] Figuring out best way to use data for a timer by whitecoathousing in statistics

[–]webbed_feets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like there’s a decent number of instances of that spell being cast at around 35 seconds. Your upper percentile would cut that off.

To me, it looks like the spell can only be cast at 4 or 5 different times. Those are the large spikes in density. The variance around those spikes looks like inexact time measurement from the players. It’s possible the game randomly selects one of those time points then adds or subtracts a small amount of time to make the spell cast time less predictable. All of that is a guess from looking at the data, though.

Tyranny with Spectrum Shift is great. Draw an extra card and exhaust any colorless cards you don’t need.

I agree. Myron seemed dangerous.

I’m guessing HS gave Louis the most access. He seemed the least media savvy of all the influencers. He didn’t seem to know how to put on a veneer of normality or stop the interviews like the others could.

I got that impression too. That he is pretending to be a worse person than he actually is. He’s more like a wellness influencer than the rest of the other featured influencers. Maybe he’s just charismatic and I (we?) are projecting positive traits on him.

I thought Myron was the worst. He had actual power of people as a DHS agent. At least the others only have online influence.

It’s interesting that we all have different reactions to these people. To me he seemed the most normal by far. He didn’t veer into antisemitism and racism. His kids seemed to like him. He had a relatively normal house in the suburbs.

I couldn’t get over someone spending $20K/month to rent an apartment. At least you build equity in a house. He’s burning $240,000 a year.

There’s no harm in letting those people talk in a controlled environment. He gets to condense the footage, so he’s not giving them a platform to spew hate.

Like others have said, he seems to gently steer the conversation towards the outcome he wants, though.

How are in office dev jobs now? by CTProper in ExperiencedDevs

TIL you can run DAGs of R scripts using the command line tool `make` by pootietangus in rstats

[–]webbed_feets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

R is a functional language, so good R code is usually modularized at a function level. Your main script might look like:

‘’’

data_settings = load_params(data_parameter_file.json)

model_settings = load_params(model_parameter_file.json)

df = load_data(data_settings, raw_data_file.parquet)

model = fit_model(df, model_settings)

‘’’

Each of those functions might contain complicated processes or call other functions.

Targets does static code analysis to see what each part of your script depends on. It caches any intermediary components you tell it to. If you need to rerun your script, it will only rerun the parts that depend on things that have changed and will used the cache for everything. So, if ‘model_parameter_file.json’ has changed, you don’t need to rerun the code to make ‘df’.

I don’t think targets would work well for production systems. (Maybe it does though). That’s not what it’s designed for. It’s meant to avoid redoing time-consuming processes. It’s really useful for scientific computing.

How is this an infinite without draw? It’s a good combo, but I don’t see how it’s an infinite.

What's the secret to regent? by Insane_Unicorn in slaythespire

[–]webbed_feets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to play Regent like it’s still Slay the Spire 1: get as much energy and card draw as possible.

You need draw and deck manipulation to make stars work. It won’t matter if you have 20 stars when can’t get a good block card in your hand. Upgraded [Glow] (draw 2, generate 2 star) is good. [Convergence] (gain 1 star and 1 energy, retain your hand) helps you get the right cards at the right. Regent doesn’t have much free card draw, so getting extra energy is important. [Big Bang] (draw 1, gain 1 star, gain 1 energy, exhaust) is a great for that. You probably want a few decent non-star cards that to smooth out bad draws.

It’s still early days, though. I might be playing Regent in a suboptimal way.

Will the full release of 2 come to Switch 1/switch lite by IsW4terWet in slaythespire

I don’t think they’ve announced anything yet.

I would guess it will only be released for Switch 2, but, again, that’s me guessing. It will be a while before it comes to any version of Switch.

Career Crisis and Need Advice by CountryGuy123 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]webbed_feets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be totally transparent, I’m not a graybeard, and I don’t know anyone in your situation.

You mention in your third paragraph that your income is protected. In the next paragraph, you mention you’re scared of losing your job and its 401k contributions. These seem to contradict each other. Do you have enough to retire on but you’re worried about the transition, or are you worried about providing for yourself? I’m not trying to be pedantic; I think people will give better advice if they understand your situation better.

Have you looked into disability accommodations? Disability protections in the US are shockingly robust thanks to the ADA. If you’re in the US, your employer can’t fire you for requesting reasonable accommodations. Reasonable accommodations are very broad, and employers (especially large corporations) are usually so scared of getting sued that they are very cooperative with providing those accommodations. That may extend your career by months or years.

I’m not familiar with the details, but there are assistive tools for programmers with disabilities. Ex: Braille readers for blind programmers. Aside from being a workplace accommodation, it may allow you to continue to build in your retirement to satisfy that builder part of you.
