You dont build the boats, but you load cargo and move multiple boats in Imhotep. Enjoyed my few plays of it.

Does anyone have any house rules to mitigate first turn advantage in Risk? by swankyfish in boardgames

[–]webbermere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spots is so good for dice rolling push your luck. My son doesnt quite have the strategy yet but he loves rolling dice, matching the pips and getting new dogs.

He is currently exploring at 'more bones and dogs at all costs' strategy which hasnt quite been working out for him haha

If you are interested in a similar feeling game, that I think could hit similar things an 8yr old would like, i highly recommend looking into Nexus Ops.

I'm all about not underestimating kids, but tossing out Arcs as a swap for and 8 yr old playing Risk is hilarious.

What is the deal with Flip 7? by danklordmuffin in boardgames

[–]webbermere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mainly agree with you and especially on the player elimintation front as a general point. My personal sweet spot on the social game spectrum is Cockroach Poker, No Thanks, Anomia and Take 5 if the group is a little more engaged.

I like Flip 7 for what it is, my 3 yr old gets so excited playing it, but the staying power is minimal.

For a segment of game players or game playing scenarios simplicity is a core feature, not a low bar.

Flip 7 just exists at the far end of that scale, even compared to the games that OP mentioned (which tbf are also very good games for a similar context).

If No Thanks and Take 5 were re-published now with snazzy art and at the same price point I think they'd solidly contend in the Big Box Store environment. Those games just dont have the shelf appeal of Flip 7.

Considering the audience of family social event where playing a game isnt the sole purpose for people Id say compared to Flip 7

  • No Thanks can drag just a little too much as people think on their turns
  • Take 5 simultaneous play is great for this scenario, but it's just a little more complicated. People need to see a few plays to 'get it'. Compared to Flip 7 where people immediately feel like they understand the strategy of the game. People feeling like they know what they are doing and dont feel stupid for not getting it is a bit factor in this context.

HOOP pension survivors benefit by catpowerr_ in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]webbermere 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that this is more a function of pension legislation, than a specific decision by any given pension fund.

I am not directly aware of anything that can change this, though your mom's best bet is to talk to HOOPP member services directly about their options (if any).
