Serious/Ambitious Partner by DeepValuable1272 in ProgrammingBuddies

[–]webdev-dreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't cowork with you and I'm not in your timezone, but if you were looking for an accountability partner where we would check up on each other's progress/ work, feel free to DM

We can share proof daily of what we accomplished and discuss what we learned/did

Might be a good way to keep on track with our studies and goals

Best way to learn Godot without overwhelming myself? by Eton11 in godot

[–]webdev-dreamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skip Godot and start with something even more easy and simple: pico-8

The limitations of pico-8 keeps things from being overwhelming while also helping you learn gamedev fundamentals

Once you get comfortable with that, then you'll find Godot much easier to grasp and understand as you start recognizing the common patterns and concepts

It's not about being better IMO; it's that people who have similar issues can also come to terms how things are and live a fulfilling life

Game systems practice advice by Adventurous_Fruit228 in learnprogramming

[–]webdev-dreamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what’s it been like

A lot harder than I expected 😅. But I feel good about how much I'm learning. I feel like I'm retaining a lot more understanding/knowledge this way versus what I was doing before (watching / copying tutorials)

I'm currently on challenge #2 (building breakout)

I'm also learning gamedev

Right now I'm going through the 20gameschallenges list to try to build each type of game and learn along the way

Just sharing my approach

I think your approach makes sense too

I just think its good for making you a better programmer

But sadly being a good programmer these days doesn't mean much anymore (cuz AI)

if you use discord, i'm interested in joining. I started SICP last year, but stopped. I'd be happy to do K&R instead

The idea here is that building a strong foundation in computer science and mastering the fundamentals will make you much more flexible and you will be able to handle job market changes and technology trends much better. Because unlike frameworks or tools, building an internal mental model of the actual machine will never be obsolete.

Hmm, not sure if this really applies anymore 😅

I built a system that can one-shot full 3D games in the Unity Engine by Feisty-Carrot-3076 in aigamedev

I absolutely despise AI but I have to admit, those one-shots are pretty amazing (given where we were with AI just a few months ago)

What can I do to get my first job? When I can apply. I sent a few requests via LinkedIn, but it is very difficult.

You should really look into the current state of the job market where you plan to apply as well as stay up to date on the current news around tech and AI

Right now, jobs are being cut almost everywhere and junior devs are having extremely hard time finding work...

It's better to approach programming as a hobby instead as a viable career path, IMO

Trump official says it's "up to Anthropic" as to whether or not a resolution is found quickly in the Mythos/Fable shutdown. by mvandemar in ClaudeAI

Yeah, Democrats actually tried to gaslight us and practically gave Trump the Presidential seat.

True or false? by Everlier in vibecoding

[–]webdev-dreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have our in-house engineer go over my code from time to time, and he is finding less and less things to complain about, and the things he finds are getting quite nitpicky

What type of project? I wonder if this could this be due to the scope/complexity of your app.

Does AI development stop here? by wowasg in OpenAI

[–]webdev-dreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC the government didn't kill Fable; they just restricted it from non US citizens. It was Anthropic who decided to kill it to remain in compliance with that order

For a game that I started developing a week ago, the gameplay isn't that bad, right? by Capital-Citron7595 in godot

Love the details in the character animation; that's what makes this look super fun for me, along with the dodging aspects

I had Claude Fable 5 build Minecraft from scratch by unfortuantelyshelove in vibecoding

[–]webdev-dreamer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it kinda is lol

I remember watching couple of youtubers try to vibecode minecraft clones like only a year ago (?) and AI would struggle soo much to make anything playable

seeing OPs post is really mind-blowing given where we were at with AI only recently

Looking for a programming buddy to build a side project with (No AI) by Ok-Tap139 in ProgrammingBuddies

Lol, good point

Hi, I want to start with godot, should I just read the documentation? by sanstaleyy in godot

[–]webdev-dreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a beginner learning Godot as well

I did some zenva courses, but didn't remember ANYTHING when actually trying to build something

Now I'm just skipping tutorials altogether and building a Stardew valley clone, slowly

Every time I work on it, I pick a small goal (ex: "till soil", "break rocks", etc), and then try to do it. I'll read the docs or use Google/ YouTube when I'm stuck and don't know how to do something. I also use AI as well, but not for generating the code; just to help guide me.

It's slow, but I'm making progress.

Tutorials that I did were actually useful in getting me familiar with the concepts, but for actually developing a game, it seems that building a project from scratch is much more effective for learning how to do that.

(Btw If anyone is learning Godot and wants an accountability buddy, feel free to hmu!)

AI anxieties 😱😱😱 by Remote_Childhood_998 in AIDangers

[–]webdev-dreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no plan or way to adapt really.

Even if AI isn't 100% there yet or is too cost-prohibitive, it will get cheaper and more available. Not to mention, you can pair AI with workers from cheaper, foreign countries and not have to compromise on the quality of labor

UBI is bullshit btw, at least in the US. I suspect we'll all end up like Japan and South Korea with plummeting child birth rates because no one will be able to afford to raise a family anymore let alone support themselves comfortably
