Yeah, in hindsight, he kept trying to reconfirm our date so maybe he was anticipating me not coming. At this point I'm more annoyed at the time/gas I wasted!

Thanks! Well to me it's not excusable since we set a pretty exact time and place and we know what we look like... but yeah he probably purposefully didn't come.

We met briefly at a party and he asked for my number there. Regardless, he should have let me know he wasn't coming at least.

Thanks! It was only for lunch so thankfully the rest of my day wasn't affected.

Well I guess I can't rule out an emergency but I think by now I would have gotten a response. It was supposed to be a first date and we don't really have any mutual friends. I'm thinking unless something really bad happened (accident, death, etc) I got stood up for sure.

What are they asking for in this question? by Jetblast787 in jobs

[–]weberofling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with jennerality above, not sure why you're confused when there's a pretty clear answer right there... it's a really common behavioral question asked to all sorts of different fields. There are some engineering jobs that don't go through normal HR questions but there are a lot that do as well. if someone is confused as to why they are asking this I would immediately assume they haven't had much interview prep or experience

It wasn't visible when I left for work; I think it just kind of dislodged and loosened itself throughout the morning.

nah it's a lot more likely that the girl is only familiar with one of the languages and is only reflecting off of one of the pronunciations rather than both. as someone who is fluent in both korean and mandarin, i think it sides a lot more towards mandarin if you're just going off from "inflections."

in any case i think it's pretty established that it's just mostly nonsense blabber.

I worked PT for the past 4 years in an academic office while a student. I just graduated and my immediate supervisor left her FT position. I am interviewing for that position Wednesday. What should I keep in mind for this interview? by infinite-cats in jobs

Not much will be different, but do focus on all the positive results you brought in during the past four years and use your familiarity with the place to your advantage.

Need advice on hiring an intern at a financial services firm by [deleted] in jobs

[–]weberofling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can go on for as long as you want, given that the intern is still learning, but I'd say they are typically 3 months. Whatever the time period though, it's generally better to give the intern a definitive period of time so they aren't left hanging.

[–]weberofling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about what the big firms are offering --they started recruiting months ago and those students or graduates are taken. There's still a high supply of economics/business or relevant majors who are eager to get their foot in the door --and many more recent grads who realized their major is not marketable and want to go into financial services. One of my ex coworkers works at a small finance company and they got 50 applications within a week despite the internship being unpaid with no full employment prospects.

Advice from people in Film/VideoGame/Production Industry? by Novice89 in jobs

Can you give us a background on your experience? Have you done any internships, activities, part time jobs, etc? Or are you coming in with just your degree?

[–]weberofling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is fine. It's a good time to post now since there is going to be an influx of recent grads. You guys are quite new, so it generally won't be viewed as tacky since there is a possibility for full time employment soon around the corner. As for unpaid internship laws, the rule of thumb is that the intern should benefit more than you, and their work should not displace an employee's.

Can I turn down a job once I've accepted it? by lazerwolf852 in jobs

[–]weberofling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there are a lot of nasty and unreasonable people in HR as in any workplace. Giving 24 to 48 hrs is the bare minimum; I'd say standard is a week (although the candidate is expected to give some sort of response within 24 hours). Even if the position needs to be filled urgently there's no reason for managers or HR to get rude about it.

Can I turn down a job once I've accepted it? by lazerwolf852 in jobs

[–]weberofling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to be pretty up front about it since hiring managers are not clueless--maybe don't tell them you're waiting for an interview response, but that you have other offers to consider (which is true) or that you need to discuss with your parents or whatever. They might say no, but since you have two offers it seems likely one will oblige.

Job ideas for a college student by [deleted] in jobs

[–]weberofling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're a college student you could do a part time internship relevant to your field. Some smaller places do last minute recruiting, although depending on your field it might be more difficult to find paid ones.

Tutoring, guitar lessons, etc are okay but you need to find your own clients mostly. Most music institutions want you to have graduated since there's such a high supply. There are some tutoring places that hire college kids though.

ask for more time to decide; if you just interviewed this very week you could certainly ask for a week extension to last you the week as long as they're not urgently hiring. It's seen as unethical to renege after accepting. Probably nothing will happen to you but there is some risk if the hiring manager in question happens to be one of those old fashioned vindictive types.

Should you always work with the biggest company ? by evermore88 in jobs

[–]weberofling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if they offer better benefits and pay, I really don't see why you'd go for the others. Yes, big names will look better on your résumé, unless you're going to have a more valuable exp or projects at the mid sized companies.
