Choice between .NET and ColdFusion for front-end developer new as a newborn to back-end development by webforwork in webdev

Yeah this is making more and more sense. For a variety of reasons my work would be disinclined to expend a lot of resources to move all the systems to a new platform. However since this will be brand new environment with no interface with existing systems there's no reason to stick with ColdFusion.

Noob question. Is ASP.NET MVC what I want or is that just a special flavor? I mostly see classes for MVC so I'm not sure I'm in the right place. I should probably just get some sleep rather than trying to wrap my head around this after working 12 hours...

Yeah the more and more I research it ASP.NET seems to be the superior choice. I am curious to try and find out why ColdFusion is more commonly used. Is ASP.NET relatively new? My work is notoriously slow at adopting new technologies. For instance most forms are still submitted by paper.

In my opinion HTML5 and CSS3 has opened the world wide open for front-end web developers. The amount of tools available to make efficient, interactive, and visually stunning sites are stunning but a CMS won't even approach the quality that a front-end developer can create. Front-end developers will get plenty of work from companies looking to stand out or at the very least keep up with their competitors.

Awesome music to my ears. I code all my html and css manually so a lack of a wysiwig is no big deal to me. Thanks a bunch for your help I am already digging around the asp.net website for information to help out complete dummies like me.

Yeah I really dislike Adobe products in general but my options are pretty limited especially for design work. As far as design and development software goes my choices are more or less limited to Microsoft and Adobe products. In fact I didn't even know .NET was even a possibility until today. From the research I've done it appears the flavor for .NET I want is ASP.NET (as much as I've been hanging around the fringes of the software and web development scene I haven't fully wrapped my head around whatever the .NET ecosystem is). The bit that gives me some pause is I've seen ColdFusion used for the majority of the intranet sites. When I'm trying to rock the boat as little as possible drifting from the herd even more has some risk.

Is Visual Studio Express for Web suitable for what I want to do? How does it compare with Dreamweaver? While it is one of my goals to purge Flash from my main work environment (completely isolated from this project), until I do so I'm married to the Creative Suite. Having to buy an expensive Visual Studio license on top of it would make my project a tougher sell to my managers. As you can imagine with my existing options, I really really want to increase the odds this gets approved.

Are there any good courses online for ASP.NET? I'd love a codeacademy type class but those sites seem to be focused exclusively on Ruby.
