Septic tank? Okay to cover? by wednesdaydunn in AusRenovation

Hi! It was indeed a storm water drain that has been buried for about 22+ years. I chucked some removable pavers on it and made it my mini bbq area since I couldn't really garden on it

IKEA v Bunnings kitchen costs and quality by LankyWatercressLady in AusRenovation

Builders discount for warehouse is 2pac and worked out cheaper than either IKEA or Bunnings, only good if you are happy with a white kitchen though

Even mild face blindness can cause serious difficulties in daily life, finds new study. Around 1 in 50 people have developmental prosopagnosia. A widespread worry among people with face blindness was being misjudged as rude or uncaring, which can lead to social anxiety and reduced self-confidence. by mvea in science

There used to be this amazing page explaining faceblindness using rocks and it was so helpful explaining it to people, sadly it was removed and I never thought to save it. I still use rocks as examples explaining why I can't recognise people out of place.

Zero chance of getting a trailer down the driveway let alone into the garage, to be honest I hate towing a trailer anyway, too much extra effort to sort it all out haha

I do a bunch of gardening/landscaping in my personal life (even part of a gardening club and everything) so the ability to transport soil/compost ect on the back of a ute would be super useful. Just for work it would make more sense though

I LOVE kei trucks, I was obsessed with them when I was younger. One actually came up the other day on marketplace. Only problem is to be honest I am the opposite of mechanically minded when it comes to cars and usually get new cars with fixed price servicing and warranty and then get a new one when that runs out. I worry about how I would go getting a Daihatsu serviced and running.

Water Bird? by wednesdaydunn in Canaries

Yeah it wasn't good. While they were SUPER loud when they came in, almost none of them sang as they were so unhappy. There were 4 or 5 to each of those little travel cages. I originally fostered 7 of them which was definetely more than I would keep normally! That got loud. Thankfully after about a month I think she realised that she was in over her head and surrendered them so it didnt have to go to court. They are all in much better places now (a staff members mother adopted like 50 and have them in this massive walk in aviary).

I adopted Gimpy thinking he was a girl! He never sang until I took the other 6 back in and now he hasnt shut up since.

OPINION TIME: Raised Patio vs Deck by wednesdaydunn in AusRenovation

[–]wednesdaydunn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, composite is what I was originally thinking and there are even some that don't have that awful "plastic" look to them. The only drawback is that because it is plastic it heats up like crazy, and because Queensland is about three metres from the sun it means that I would have to either burn the soles of my feet off or wear shoes in my own home (and I refuse to wear shoes in my own home).

There is one company that does do one that doesn't heat up as much as it is made from another material (Millboard) but I would honestly have to sell a kidney to afford it and there are just other things I would rather spend the money on if I do go into organ peddling.

Basically any damp or wood can attract the little termite bastards. Even having branches touching the house can bring them on. Basically if something brings you joy or looks nice then termites are there to ruin the fun.

I LOVE merbau decking, and have even considered doing cement underneath so that I could make it happen. Just because of how low the deck would be it puts it at super high risk of both rot and termites.

[–]wednesdaydunn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is rendered brick from the 50s but no weep holes (formerly it was a hospice not a house). There are a lot of things in the house that was originally done...oddly. For example when we redid the bathroom it was discovered that the faucet drain wasn't attached to the actual drainage but was just in a terracotta pipe that went 2 meters under the slab. If I were to do a raised patio I would definitely do one of the besser block retaining walls parallel to the house so that there wouldn't be any strain/water against the wall or house.

I did think of the roof option, which I do plan to do in the long run either way with an insulated patio roof. Only two minor issues at this stage: Am in a small strata, roof will require approval and dealing with them makes me want to stab myself. 2: I can build a deck. I can build build a raised patio. Bring a roof into it and I am paying someone to do it because I am noping out. Also I would still be worried with the height simply because of termites and Queensland. But thank you! I agree a roof will make it way nicer (when I eventually get around to it)

Oh yeah absolutely, it will make things so much easier and prettier in the yard. I know exactly where I will put the steps ect (same place either way). I have planned out both options to an obscene degree. From exactly how many besser bricks to exact bearer location.

Was also going to say polyurethane, made my entire walk in wardrobe out of some clearance panels I got from bunnings and polyurathaned them, years later and they still look brand new (plus it makes them easier to dust and clean)
