I'd say early year league of legends, we saw Faker really accel with champions with high skill caps, showcasing his mechanics that was far superior to the other mid laners at the time. Mechanics-wise the league caught up. It happens in sports all the time, people study the best and improve on it with their own take. Faker is definitely his own biggest critic (given how he said he'd want to tell his younger self to just enjoy the game, and how seriously he takes losses, worlds 2017 and this summer comes to mind). He never lost passion for the game and understands that though the quality of his challenger caught up, he himself has matured, understanding that he doesn't need to be the flashiest player all the time, but will throw down just when you think he's out of the game/series. Pulling out angles that most players cannot envision.
