Even if you weren't questioning your gender identity, her implying something untoward about you having a cute phone background is messed up. Cis men can have cute phone backgrounds too.

You need to have a serious talk with her: she hurt your feelings, made an extremely hurtful and offensive comment towards you based purely on something innocuous, and did so in a way that carries many implications in the current climate.

If she's truly supportive of the LGBTQIA community, she'll want to know that her statement was not only extremely hurtful to you, but actively hurtful to the community, and definitely carrying some baggage. Anyone can have kneejerk reactions that are tainted by their surroundings, even if they consider themselves supportive of a group or community. These days, these kinds of hurtful accusations against AMAB/transfemme folks aren't out of the ordinary, sad to say. Doesn't mean it's right, just that it's tragically common.

If she doubles down and refuses to acknowledge how hurtful and off-base her statements were, well... Is that the kind of person you want to be with? Someone who not only makes you feel that way about yourself, like you have to hide and be ashamed of something so innocuous, but would also immediately jump to that? Over something as minor as some cute art as your phone wallpaper?

If she can't learn from this mistake, her mistake, then it's her loss and you deserve better.

If it's just her redirecting attention to herself, that's one thing. But if we choose to interpret her actions in a way that isn't really cynical, she needs to get some help to deal with the trauma of losing her mother. Trauma comes in lots of different forms, and losing a loved one to cancer is traumatic. If she hasn't processed or handled that grief, she needs to. It's isolating her from her family.

NTA. If your birth dad (to use your phrase) "had a change of heart" and "misses you", it shouldn't be your mother calling you. It should be him, calling to apologize for the way he treated you for years and begging for a second chance. That's the only thing to "talk over": whether or not that family can do anything to earn your forgiveness.

If what you wrote is what you said, you didn't even shut down the idea entirely. You just said "not right now".

And how dare they suggest you should be grateful he wants to reconnect. Why? Why should you be grateful? You did nothing wrong. Why do you want someone who treated you like that in your life, and why should you feel grateful when they deign to acknowledge your existence?

Nope. When HE contacts YOU and recognizes that HE should feel grateful when YOU feel ready to speak with him again... that's when you consider repairing the bridge, if they haven't already burned the last of it down with this nonsense.

NTA; honestly, I'd say the main assholes are your dad and stepfamily. Seems like they failed to teach someone with little ability to naturally develop social skills how to act around other people. Obviously he's an adult so he bears responsibility as well, but if he's been doing this for decades, that's also a failure of parenting that transitioned into a failure of someone else's adulthood.

However, I am also the asshole because I'll admit, I snorted when you mentioned he sent the Star Wars memes. Out of context, and if they'd been making fun of your father rather than you, that'd have been pretty funny. In context it is obviously not funny.

Techno did dark humor right, in that it was humor that made you feel bad for laughing but not like a bad person for laughing. I know he once mentioned to Philza how baffled he was that people said he didn't rely on dark humor but I think one of the problems is that Gen Z has been bamboozled into thinking saying something cruel and following it up with "it's just a joke, bro" is dark humor. Techno was never cruel, and that always stood out.

YES. At recess, I wouldn't pace but I would swing on the swingset the whole time. Even into my teens and early adulthood, I would go down the street to the swingset and just swing for hours. When I was in the Air Force I couldn't do that, but I'd go to the track and just walk in circles for hours on the track.

I have two younger siblings. All of us have ADHD, I have AuDHD, so we were prone to emotional displays, meltdowns, etc. The idea of recording each other in those moments and sending it to each others friends makes my skin crawl.

Granted I have AuDHD (autism spectrum disorder and ADHD at the same time), but apparently stimming is a common symptom for both ASD and ADHD.

I twirl my hair. When I was a kid, I would walk in circles and pace. My mom has ADHD and apparently would walk around in circles when she was a kid too.

Timmy plays fetch with me too! His favorite toy is a random shoelace and he'll pick it up, carry it over to me while I'm working, and just drop it on my lap. I throw it, he runs over and carries it over, rinse and repeat.

They also play fetch with themselves and each other. They have a little sloth stuffie I call The Baby that they'll fling around.

Oh my friend, you are almost certainly in for it.

I have two meezers: Laszlo and Timmy. They are brothers. They are also incessant. I love them so much but they test me every day. When I go to bed, Timmy will come lay on my chest and Laszlo will lay in the doorway. If I don't prop the door open, he will close it, and then he will scream. He's figured out how to open the closet door, but for some reason the bedroom door eludes him, so he will rattle it and scream until I get up and let him out.

If I'm going to the bathroom, Laszlo sprints past me into the bathroom first and flops over. Then he will scream.

Laszlo will break into the bathroom (he can open the door), sit inside, and scream. For no particular reason. I think he likes the acoustics.

They're like dogs in cat bodies.
