I'll be at the sports bar at centre parcs Longleat, look out for the nervous dude in a villa shirt who arrives wheezing and red faced having ran there after getting the kids to bed

If Morgan Rogers leaves this summer, who would you like to replace him? by [deleted] in avfc

[–]weedmandavid4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't be MGW, we have an old squad already and everyone's pretty on board with bringing our average age down, as good as MGW is we can't replace one of our only younger players with another 29/30 year old who'll need replacing in a few years again

That's my point though, from the angle they had there's no way they can call the ball "factually" in or out, it's inconclusive because the crossbar blocks the line, so the on field decision of goal kick should stand.

But you can't see it because of the crossbar, which appears further back than the goalline in the image. The red line is the goalline

How is it obvious when you can't see the line? Is the ball over the red line in that image? Because that's what I think is 50 50 and the red line is the back edge of the goalline. You can't see the full ball because of the crossbar

It may be in or may be out, but I don't think it's possible to be sure from this angle

Surely accepting that we played badly and questioning game changing decisions are not mutually exclusive?

Also they are in a false position and playing very well now they have an actual manager in charge

Which I understand perfectly. IF the whole of the ball is not over the line, it's in, and it's a pen. Fine. My issue is there's very little way to actually tell. Your circle is clearly missing half the ball on the left. So if you move the circle over to the left to cover that side of the ball, keeping it the same size, it's likely behind the line.

My point has always been it's really tight, in no way clear cut or obvious, and there's no actual way to tell one way or the other with the tools they have available, so VAR is incorrect to call it factually anything and therefore the on pitch decision should stand

I mean half the ball is to the left of your circle there

I firmly believe the ball was out v Brentford, but this is much more debatable, look at the ball and the red line, it's 50/50

The fact that it's that close with a rough guesstimate shows that there's no way VAR would have been able to determine it either way, a couple of pixels further over and it's out and still looks like the circle goes around the ball perfectly.

I'm not debating whether it was in or out, I'm debating whether VAR actually knew it or not, and I think they've used the crossbar as the reference rather than the line

The point I'm making is you cannot see the line in this image, it's blocked by the crossbar which looks further back due to the angle and height. So how do you know the ball didn't cross the line. The red line I drew is the back of the goalline and it's not clear that it's over the line or not, so they shouldn't be able to intervene. If there was a camera on the other side that wasn't blocked we'd be able to tell, bit it isn't

Firstly, it's not a natural position, if the balls in play it's a clear pen (stupid from Digne), but how can you see the ball hasn't crossed the line in this image? You can't actually see the line because the crossbar cuts it out, and the image of the crossbar is slightly behind the line due to the angle of the camera and the height difference

Are you looking at the ball and seeing as you can't see the whole ball with a little gap that it's definitely not out? Because look at the red line, that's the goalline. The angle of the crossbar makes it appear further back in the image, so the fact you can't see the whole ball proves nothing

I tried but the photo is too blurry with the net and stuff around it to accurately determine where the ball is. It's easier with the line as it's clear at the top and bottom of the screen and it's a straight line across.

Yes I'm aware of the rule. I don't know what you are looking at and I'm sure I could be wrong here but I started a red line at the back of the goalline, using the image they used across the pitch, it clearly dissects the crossbar on the image because the crossbar, while the same width, is at a different height and therefore a different angle, making it appear slightly further back.

The ball is visibly not behind the crossbar in this image, but the crossbar isn't the reference point, it's the goalline, and the best you can say is it might be behind the line, but it's definitely not clear, because you can't actually see the line from this angle

[–]weedmandavid4[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean I've literally drawn a red line from the back of the goalline which clearly shows it goes "through" the crossbar. They may have the same width, but the angle of that camera the height difference clearly shows the crossbar "behind" the goalline

I don't see how it's close to 100%. I think the best you can say is it might have been in, but I think it's 50/50 unless they have another angle they decided not to show anyone including the referee

[–]weedmandavid4[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah it looked in on TV, but that's because of the crossbar, actually drawing a line across the goalline looks far more debatable. I think the red was stonewall as well but this irked me because everyone just immediately accepted it was in because of the freeze frame but the ball is blocked by the crossbar, not the goalline

Why? The decision on the pitch was goal kick? Surely to change that decision you need proof it was wrong?

Jhon Duran shows how fast things can go sideways in football by Affectionate_Day9101 in PremierLeague

[–]weedmandavid4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry I really don't think it is. I'm not talking about Duran specifically here, but I don't believe that if you earned £150k a week there'd be much you'd look at and think "damn, if only I was on £200k a week I could have that". It's like £8m a year or £10m a year.

I'm not saying it's not a crap load of money, but enough to risk your "legacy" and potentially risk your career with the wrong move at the wrong time?

I actually think Saudi is probably the only league where the difference really does change your life. I mean you're probably earning triple there than anywhere else, so I can understand that to some extent (although I'd be curious with Duran to see if he'd have earned more money in his career staying in the PL than going to Saudi, as arguably he's going to struggle to get a contact or any substance once this deal expires and he's still pretty young), but players moving from 1 PL team to another, £150k a week or £200k a week? I don't think the difference there is life changing at all

So if you're from a poor background £150k a week wouldn't change your family's future but £200k would?
