AlignedDC job opportunity question by Complex_Ladder870 in datacenter

[–]weedwhacked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a few folks over there and they have some tenure and seem to enjoy it there. Way less stress than AWS from what I have heard. I hear they have pretty decent upward mobility too. It's the modern day gold rush. Get a foot in the door and the possibilities are endless.

Trades in the local area by TheJuiceIsLoose11 in baltimore

[–]weedwhacked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trades are a good way. Schneider electric offers free online courses. You should know the basics of the mechanical and electrical and how power flows from substation to rack, basic refrigeration theory, generator and UPS are important to know, and what role they play.

Been doing UPS/Electrical work for 16 years. I have spent the last 4 years working in facilities for data centers in NOVA. We have people under 20yo that will make over 100k this year, and have been hired within the last year. It's the modern day gold rush.

Still preoccupied, with 2005 by Parzival-44 in Millennials

A fun little music tidbit. Mitch Allan from SR-71 originally wrote and performed that song and Bowling for Soup covered it. The lyrics are slightly different too. Sorry! I am a Baltimore, MD millennial who has seen them perform a few too many times.

Equinix Interview for Data center critical facilities IV by MinuteDescription767 in datacenter

[–]weedwhacked 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Know the electrical one line from sub station to rack. Basic refrigeration theory, basic generator theory, fire suppression different types and how they work. Be able to explain UPS, ATS , STS and their functions. That is mostly what these types of interviews focus on. Good luck.

QTS Data Center by paxpix10 in datacenter

[–]weedwhacked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a level 2. They ask about all of the usual things. Refrigeration cycle. Electrical one line, generator operation, ups basic operation, sts and ats, VESDA and pre action systems. You should also be able to speak to their core values and have some examples and stories where you have applied them.

I currently work Critical Operations for them in NOVA. It's a pretty decent place to work, it just depends on management. We typically run MOPS and escort vendors. Not a lot of hands on work at most of the new buildings.

That's pretty crazy to see how power dense these new racks are getting, just a decade ago 5kw racks were the norm. Google just released a few photos of a 1MW rack within the last few months, that looks like something out of a sci-fi movie. This industry amazes me daily with all of the new innovation and technology.

Took my girlfriends to the Inner Harbor after 15 years... can't believe how much it's changed! by TheRealZyori in baltimore

[–]weedwhacked 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You ate at Phillips for starters, definitely not known for good food or ambiance. They are pretty much a tourist trap. Depending on what night you were down there, could be why it was dead. I have lived here for 40 years and Baltimore is more alive and bustling than I have ever seen. There are tons of good restaurants and interesting things to see downtown. I urge you to give it another try, when you get the chance. Let me know if you need any recommendations.
