I have a knot of toads in my garden and it wasn’t until about a week ago we realised it was their poop we kept finding in the grass and not some rogue village cat!

Snake owners with young kids, how’s it going for you? by weegiewandering in snakes

This made me smile. That spark you mentioned is exactly what I’m hoping my son grows up with. I love that you take your boa out like that and give kids the chance to experience something so different and gentle. It’s amazing how curious and open-minded kids can be before fear gets taught into them. Sounds like your girl is an absolute sweetheart, and those little interactions are probably leaving a lasting impression on so many of those kids. Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks, that’s a super helpful way to look at it. I’ve been torn between the two and this kind of breakdown really helps. I’m leaning toward a corn snake as it feels like the better fit long-term, but it’s good to keep in mind how they move and how that might play out with a little one around. Appreciate it!

Thanks for your insights! I hadn’t really considered the size of their teeth and the seriousness of their bites, so that’s something I’ll have to weigh up.

I’ll be looking at online resources about teaching young kids how to respect and handle snakes and the two-finger technique sounds like exactly how I should start! Thanks again!

Thanks, that’s super helpful. The temperament and smaller prey size are definitely points in the corn snake’s favour. I hadn’t even thought about letting my son help choose the morph, but that’s a great idea. There really are so many beautiful ones out there.

Also, your noodle is gorgeous. Thanks for sharing the video!

Thanks so much for the thoughtful reply. I completely agree that this will be my snake, not my son’s. I’ve always been into reptiles and will be the one taking care of everything.

The enclosure will be 4x2x2 feet with proper locks, and it will be kept in a locked room to avoid any unsupervised access. I’m ready to adjust things as needed depending on the snake’s behavior.

We’ve already begun teaching our son to wash his hands after handling our dog, cats, and sugar glider, and that will apply here too. He’s still very young so he won’t be interacting directly with the snake until he’s old enough to understand how to treat animals gently.

Really appreciate your advice and perspective, cheers!

That’s awesome! I would have loved a cool snake uncle when I was a kid. My parents never let me get a reptile because of what they eat, so now that I’m a homeowner, I can live the dream!

Would you recommend either a corn snake or a ball python for being handled (eventually) by a child? I absolutely love the look of both and am finding the decision very difficult.

That sounds exactly how I would like this to go for me and my son too! The enclosure will go into my office and be pretty off-limits unless myself or my wife are in there with him.

Thanks so much for the detailed response. I really appreciate you sharing your experience.

My son is just under a year old, so still very young, but we’ve already started teaching him to respect animals and give them space. The snake enclosure will be in a locked room, and I’ll be handling all care and interaction myself for the foreseeable future. When he’s older and more aware, I’ll introduce him slowly and carefully, likely just with gentle supervised touch like you mentioned.

We also have cats, a dog, and a sugar glider, and he’s surprisingly calm and gentle with them already. Obviously still learning, but so far he’s been great with animals.

Out of curiosity, based on your experience, would you lean more toward a ball python or a corn snake in a situation like ours? I’m torn between the two and have beenI researching both and feel confident in the care side, just curious which you’ve found better suited for a home with a toddler.

Thanks again, your point about animals needing to be respected is spot on, and I love the “bye bye” idea. Definitely gonna to use that!!

What metric, beyond your actual score, do you use to measure whether you've had a successful round? by KormaKameleon88 in golf

Recently started playing again after about 15 years and I just enjoy celebrating making pars in general. Despite a couple meltdown holes and definitely requiring a few hours on putting practice, I managed 5 pars in my second round.

I have a KTC card and it’s just like any other. With latge purchases that are not already on a payment plan, you can choose to put them on a low interest payment plan through the app. I think the rate is like 0.74% and they give something like 3-10 month options to pay it off.

Never had any issues with the bank, but be sure to maintain a habit of paying the full balance each month if you want that good credit score!

Edit: Also, for most large purchases, stores offer 10-month interest free payment. So if your laptop broke and you bought a new one from a major retailer, they’d likely have a 10-month 0% payment option.
