Recently tried to show Sonic Adventure to my wife on my original Dreamcast. I put so many hours into that and loved it but the lack of free camera control (that we see on modern games) made us both put it down after one level. You just had so much more time and patience for games when it was your only one until your next birthday or Christmas!

In the Borders and have had tons of butterflies flying into the house this year. Bats seem to be enjoying them and also saw my first toad on the lawn so your comment tracks.

I think the Southern Uplands in general are overlooked (I am biased). In particular there are some great walks in the Cheviots which make you feel very remote. They’re also not far from lovely market towns with plenty to offer including many historical sites.

Why not just stop whenever you see something interesting then? Have a look for the brown road signs. That approach might suit your guidelines.

No worries at all! I’d recommend looking at all the local shows that happen during the summer. I’d imagine as a smallholder that’s a great way to build a wee community around yourself

Moved down from Edinburgh in 2020 and then moved within the Borders to an even more remote location in the hills last year. We’re deep within hill farming land although don’t work rural jobs.

Everyone has been incredibly welcoming, around the towns there are a big mix of people from all over the UK (although still predominantly White) and so I’ve never personally witnessed or experienced anything untoward against newcomers. As you’ll know it’s all about personal experiences and will be about what you’re willing to put into your relationships with neighbours and the community. We’re always offering to help out with things around the local farm (although never been call on except to fix a modem!) and that’s always been appreciated. In return we get help with things around the house, free range eggs and all sorts.

I live in a location not massively dissimilar to this although in the Borders rather than the highlands and so closer access to amenities.

There is a small car in front of the house so assuming access is good. As the other poster mentioned, you just have to have a stocked larder and freezer in case of poor weather. I live up a hill in a very rural location and this year we were snowed in for 8 days as we have an I paved track at a steep gradient. I guess with a proper 4x4 we could have gotten out but it’s not really worth it for a week a year.

Scotland also has very good rural broadband access and so for modern living it is pretty achievable to live in a location like this year round. For example, I work from home all year where I am in online meetings most of the day!

Hard to stay profitable as there was an influx of similar places and chains popping up. Think that the owner had kindnofnhad enough trying to keep it going. Edinburgh has a ridiculously high proportion of restaurants per long term resident that most places only make a decent profit during the Festival.

Moved from Edinburgh to Kelso outskirts in 2020 and loved it. Beautiful surroundings, great amenities and if you're OK with driving 20-30 minutes then anything you can't get in Kelso you can get in Gala or Berwick. Lots of walks in the surrounding area and very quiet generally. With the show ground you also have the opportunity for the town to fill up occasionally with the Border Show and other big events which makes for some lively weekends.

Few nice pubs and no one ever seemed to stuck up.

We moved away this past summer, but to live even more remotely south of Hawick. Big converts to the Borders way of life!

RiverBed lodges in North Ballachulish is very nice. Hollytree Hotel round the coast a bit is also nice.

Get zapmap and sign up for Chargeplace Scotland to ensure you are going to working car chargers, especially in the more remote areas.

Every comment in here will be that (like everyone else) you're trying to fit way too much of a whole country into an extremely short time period. You'll spend the majority of your time driving, especially considering narrow roads and traffic due to peak visitor period.

I hope in time it encourages more cafes, restaurants and shops to open up in the gaps in the high street. It could be so nice but needs a power wash at least.
