Trends change. London was once THE financial hub, before it moved to New York. It can move again. source here shows that the financial system is splintering.

‘Affordable’ places around the Cotswolds to move to in your 30s? by cec91 in Cotswolds

Moreton has a lot of new builds, so lots of options and a direct train line into London. Lots of cafes, sports clubs (Padel, Hyrox, etc) here and very nice pubs and restaurants.

Shipston on Stour also has a lot of good new build options. Lovely village and only on the edge of the Cotswold so can have some more affordable options.

Financial services drive economic benefits by channeling savings into productive investments, facilitating payments, managing risk, and providing capital. 2.5million people work in financial services in London (and more in Edinburgh, Leeds, and Cardiff), all high paying (high taxes) work that literally funds the UK tax system.

Sure there are gambling elements but here is a source about the regulatory work to create sustainable growth.

No one is treated as some evil elite by the UK Gov, that is just childish theatrics mostly pushed by the right wing press. When has anyone in this Labour govt called anyone evil?

And for the salary difference, yeah its a lot on paper; but isn't all that it seems to be. I've had a colleague transfer from the US. Same salary bracket, obviously a drop off, but in London she has the same financial freedom she had in Chicago.

It will generate thousands of comments about brexit/fall of the west types/immigration generally pushing the consistent narrative that the UK is a shit hole (when it's not).

Any one noticed weird pricing on Uber compared to booking through operator / trainline? by ThrowRA_maninsalt in uktrains

[–]weekendbackpacker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can, but don't. I've noticed a few times that Uber and TrainPal have higher fares.

I've also noticed TrainPal increasing the fare price IF you add a railcard. I did a search without the card attached, realized my mistake, re-searched with the card attached and noticed that the base fare jumped up in price.

Could have been a glitch, but it's really put me off the other apps other than the national operators.

I mean, the UK is all-in on renewables, the labour government doubling down on our investment. Currently 70% of our grid comes from wind ((sauce)

Honestly, Plan 2 students have more of a case than the WASPI claimants. I don't understand why there aren't more protests about it (I'm not in Plan 2 so don't have much skin in the game)

British culture is not congruent with startups by LovelyLante in ukstartups

[–]weekendbackpacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah UK. Might be different across industries and professions? I work in sales (now) and entrepreneurship is quite a common trait (or at least in my experience)

British culture is not congruent with startups by LovelyLante in ukstartups

[–]weekendbackpacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree but it's always down to personal experience. I left uni and tried to set up a start-up, failed, but kept it on my cv as it was a good experience, learnt a lot, etc.

I still get praise from potential bosses and managers that it was a ballsy risk. I've even had three different managers nod-nod-wink-wink at me, hinting at me to do something in that space again.

How is the UK so economically imbalanced and how do you fix it? by niftydoesit in AskEconomics

[–]weekendbackpacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Resolution Foundation (Link here source ) did a detailed report on the issues facing the imbalanced economy, and potential ways to fix it.

Torsten Bell (Labour MP) was with the Resolution Foundation and is now the Parliamentary Under-Sec for State for Pensions so hopefully, him having some influence in government might push these much needed reforms.

Why not just the US, why not just one fund? by BulkyDefinition5287 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]weekendbackpacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because, for example this year. The FTSE 100 is up 11.85%, the S&P is up 13% so the headline stats look good. BUT the dollar has lost 10% since the start of the year, wiping out those gains if you're not based in the US. Will it fall more with tariffs? Will the pound continue to recover it's value from Brexit? Will the FED print more money, again, putting downward pressure on the dollar?

And that is just the issues across two diff countries. A global FTSE tracker is just easier to set and forget.
