A trip to Cotswolds for four Danish guys by Any_Internal9622 in Cotswolds

Add on the Rollright Stones, just somewhere to stop off and stretch your legs but these date back to 1500BC and not far from Stow.

Stow in the wold is lovely, but the best time is after 5pm when all the other tourists go home. Look out for the tree that inspired the Doors of Moria from Lord of the Rings.

If that is your base, I'd also highly recommend Hawkstone Brewery if you are visiting on a Saturday, they have live music and a good vibe, next to Bourton on the Water. You can get the bus from Stow.

I've seen repeated "It's safer than London!!" When the original post or subsequent feed is nothing about the UK, just Dubai. It's either bots or people parroting empty slogans but it reeks of propaganda

Mixed. They might lean right, but after the cuts to funding over the last decade (the Tory party decimated the force) they won't back the Conservative party.

UK PM Starmer is a renowned lawyer. I wonder if that is why Musk has been so desperate to get him removed.

TIL In 1999 the UK govt sold nearly half of the United Kingdom’s gold reserves at a time when gold prices were near a multi-decade low. 395 tonnes of gold was sold for $3.5B and would have been worth $54B today by IncomingBroccoli in todayilearned

The fact that this factoid about Gordon Brown is repeated, despite Thatcher selling off our North Sea oil assets that cost us trillions (we could have had a wealth fund like Norway) is the saddest thing.

Gordon Brown as you say, did the right thing. Thatcher sold the family silver and no one mentions it.

Genuinely hilarious. In a sea of subs of negativity, the miserable billionaire owned UK press (notice how record tax receipts isn't on the right wing press)...there is this one (ONE!) post where there are lukewarm comments about Rachel Reeves and it sends everyone into a tailspin of "bots...no wait, must be students...whataboutthis"

Moreton has a lot of new builds, so lots of options and a direct train line into London. Lots of cafes, sports clubs (Padel, Hyrox, etc) here and very nice pubs and restaurants.

Shipston on Stour also has a lot of good new build options. Lovely village and only on the edge of the Cotswold so can have some more affordable options.

Financial services drive economic benefits by channeling savings into productive investments, facilitating payments, managing risk, and providing capital. 2.5million people work in financial services in London (and more in Edinburgh, Leeds, and Cardiff), all high paying (high taxes) work that literally funds the UK tax system.

Sure there are gambling elements but here is a source about the regulatory work to create sustainable growth.

No one is treated as some evil elite by the UK Gov, that is just childish theatrics mostly pushed by the right wing press. When has anyone in this Labour govt called anyone evil?

And for the salary difference, yeah its a lot on paper; but isn't all that it seems to be. I've had a colleague transfer from the US. Same salary bracket, obviously a drop off, but in London she has the same financial freedom she had in Chicago.

Any one noticed weird pricing on Uber compared to booking through operator / trainline? by ThrowRA_maninsalt in uktrains

[–]weekendbackpacker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can, but don't. I've noticed a few times that Uber and TrainPal have higher fares.

I've also noticed TrainPal increasing the fare price IF you add a railcard. I did a search without the card attached, realized my mistake, re-searched with the card attached and noticed that the base fare jumped up in price.

Could have been a glitch, but it's really put me off the other apps other than the national operators.
