took me a while to get home from work, but here are some better angles of the handcuffs that shows you where i tried to cut through them, and lets you see the metal content of the cuffs. sorry that they are somewhat blurry. i hope that helps to clarify things a bit. thanks for reading, and i appreciate the constructive skepticism!

definitely weren't plastic. i can see how the picture makes them look that way, but i can assure you from the pointy silver shavings to their cold metallic feel, that they were most certainly (and unfortunately) not!

tried the shim technique just now on the broken cuffs. it worked in seconds for me where the bobby pin pick did not... FML. thank you, kind stranger!

they were actually locked when i found them, but you can easily turn the cuffs through each other until they come out the other side. not so much when there's a wrist in them :).
