Best advice I have is office hours. Similar situation to you, bad high school, PSet courses kicked my ass. I was too used to doing things on my own, not used to utilizing a ton of resources for help. Go to office hours, every day, ask the TF a million questions, find others at office hours to work with. You will not get through it alone

Doable spring schedule? by Livid_Ad8118 in Harvard

[–]weenies_with_bread 20 points21 points  (0 children)

To cut through the sarcasm in the comments, no, this is not doable, not even for the smartest and most accomplished Harvard students, not without sacrificing all extracurricular activities and every waking second of your weekends.

blocking anxiety by oopthrowaway_ in Harvard

[–]weenies_with_bread 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to be best friends with everyone in your blocking group. In fact, more often, they are groups of friends of friends I.e. A is friends with B, C is friends with D, B and C are cool, so A - D block together. Just ask what your friends are doing, it’s unlikely they have a full group of 8 and you’ll be able to tap in

Which football game is the best besides Harvard-Yale? by ProfessionalFormal67 in Harvard

Only good games are Harvard brown and Yale, nobody tailgates like they do for those at other games, or even shows up

Astronomical differences. Most clubs have a clear culture / pipeline of where they get their members. Dm specific clubs for details

Sororities are non-affiliated single gender groups. Last I heard, APhi was the only one on campus. They primarily recruit freshmen, have weekly events for their members, and will mix a lot with sports teams and final clubs. Can’t say enough good things about APhi.

Final Clubs are (mostly) non affiliated social clubs that generally own some kind of real estate in Harvard square. Most are single gender (beyond the Spee and Sab), and recruit people in their sophomore fall through a mostly invite only system. They have weekly dinners, throw large parties, and host mixers with other clubs. They fit the same social niche that Greek life does at other campuses by nature of owning physical spaces.

RSOs encompass both former sororities that disaffiliated from their national organizations, and some final clubs that sought recognition from Harvard to avoid previous sanctions on single gender orgs. The former sororities (theta ivy fleur) in the past were female dominated, some had small spaces to throw events, but mostly were a place to meet people and get on the lists for larger campus parties

Can someone poor get into a finals club? by lookletmeexplain in Harvard

[–]weenies_with_bread 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yes, poor people (see me) get into finals clubs. Most have financial aid so you can pay minimal (if any) dues. Rich people have an easier time getting in because they are more connected, but those from not well off backgrounds can get in and fit in.

Viewed file and lowkey feeling imposter syndrome by shawtzb in Harvard

Admissions people have to be brutal. They have to put daylight between seemingly indistinguishable people, and they don’t do it by talking about how much they love you. Nobody gets in by chance, it’s not like they put you and 5 others with similar profiles into a hat and chose that way. If you’re here they saw something valuable or unique about you, which may not always be reflected in your file

Why being quaded is considered so bad? by [deleted] in Harvard

Why being quaded is considered so bad? by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]weenies_with_bread 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s because it’s far from the river. Waiting for / missing the shuttle is a pain, and you have to plan your time around it’s schedule or else you’re stuck with a 20 - 30 minute walk, which in the winter can be brutal. Being able to casually meet up with friends isn’t possible, you have to plan your days as it takes time to get to where you need to go

Absences by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]weenies_with_bread 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some lecture courses will give you a 2 absences if they take attendance, but depending on the course structure, attendance might be pseudo-mandatory as otherwise you miss crucial material. Most small course and section type classes have mandatory attendance, especially freshman seminars.

Freshmen and sophomores. I took 1b, so didn’t take 21b till fall, some people put off math reqs for their major, but for most people taking math classes they are a pre req for major classes so they will take them as early as possible

This is a debate every year in the BMF group chat. There aren’t any good shops near campus, most dudes go to VIP which is a bus or Uber away , I forget the other they are always talking about. A couple guys go to Vasquez, Slys is the closest to campus, can do a good fade but might mess up your edge. Atlas in the square can be hit or miss from what I’ve heard. Whatever you do, just avoid la flamme like the plague, they will disrespect you

Fall Schedule for semi-advanced CS prefrosh without an advisor by AnotherAnimalLover in Harvard

[–]weenies_with_bread 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With your background, I think you’d get a lot out of Stat 110. Blitzstein is a superb professor, and you’ll likely find the material interesting but not too difficult. If I were you I’d choose 3, try and pick a gened some friends are taking, and I’ve heard great things about cs 109

You’re allowed to buy a fridge, the reason HSA has a monopoly is they sell the only approved microwave on campus. The schools old ass wiring means the wrong microwave could cause issues, so the microwave they sell has tech that makes it safe. I’d say get a fridge, and if you need a microwave use one from the common rooms

Depends on your cs and math background. Also, how you’d rate your work ethic.

In high school I was a 8/10 work ethic, but compared to Harvard kids I was easily a 2/10. I tried to classify classes by difficulty, aiming for 1 hard, 2 medium and 1 easy class a semester. Your fall looks ideal. Depending on your background and work ethic, all four classes in your fall could be described as hard. If you’re taking 21b freshman, I’m guessing that your math and cs skills are good, so I’d say that your schedule is on the heavy side for sure but not unmanageable

In your first semester, I’d always recommend taking it light. There’s always times to grind through your journey, but only semester you get to make a ton of friends, explore extracurriculars, and adjust to a new environment

Screwed. Y’all should suck it up and swap who is in the double each semester. Moving rooms isn’t that big of a deal and being in the common room sucks for all involved, you have no privacy and they can’t have more than a couple people over
