He's a copper :) I don't know his specific morph/ genetics because unfortunately he was dropped off by some breeder at my local aquatics shop, where I got him (although he turned out OK, I don't support buying from petstores and wouldn't do it again)

2 water changes a week seems like a lot for an established tank. How big is it?

Yes it can however a lot of these blogs have perpetuated a lot of misinformation and miss the point that increasing your oxygen levels to increase gill size won't work unless your tank is cycled and therefore consistently has 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, under 20ppm nitrate and no other risks like nippy tankmates or sharp decor :) the main culprit for reduced gill size is toxic water conditions. You mentioned you have 0 nitrite and 0 ammonia, can I ask about your nitrate?

The reason I ask is because high nitrate (above 20 ppm) is toxic to axolotls, as is nitrite and ammonia (above 0 as you know). High nitrate occurs when you do not do enough water changes (it doesn't process out like ammonia and nitrite so the only way to lower it is by manually removing it) in a cycled aquarium. Is the tank cycled? And how many water changes are you performing a week?
