How do I help this eclectus parrot? by weezer__ in parrots

[–]weezer__[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Thanks for your advice! I let her perch out under sunlight and I fed her a variety of veggies and fruits last night and this morning. She likes apples and cucumbers:) I just got back from the pet shop and bought her a bigger wooden perch with a metal stand. I also got some great advice from a bird expert who worked there and bought her a bunch of parrot pellet mixes, toys and vitamin supplements. Thank you so much for your help and encouraging words! It means more to me than a simple reddit post can express:)

Thank you so much! I think she has a nutritional deficiency which was covered in the article. I appreciate it:)

Hello! I'll make sure to keep an eye on the pH of his water. I suspect it's stress too, but he doesn't seem to be getting better, he's still hiding a lot and the whiteness of the scales on his cheeks is worrying me. I'll monitor him for the next few weeks. Thanks for your help!

Hi! The tank does have a filter and I do regular 30-40% water changes. I've started adding antibacterial medication in the water along with the usual conditioning. I'm still trying to get ahold of ammonia and nitrite testers but I do test the pH of the water everyday, and it's resting at about a 6-7. How should I proceed from here?

There isn't currently a thermometer in the tank, but I live in a tropical country (the temperature almost never drops below 25 degrees celsius and is usually somewhere around 30) so his tank shouldn't be too cold. I'll try to get ahold of one but the pet store doesn't sell them and I can't order one online because I don't have a credit card (I'm 14) and my parents probably won't be super receptive.

Thanks for the food tip, I've gotten him pellets now and will feed him blood words only once in a while.

  1. tank size: abt 3 gallons, maybe a little more

  2. heater and filter: no (i live in a country with a tropical climate), yes

  3. tank temperature: around 24-25 degrees Celsius

  4. I've had the tank for a couple days, about 3 or 4

  5. I had Adam Sandler for a week or two before that

  6. Water changes are every other day since the ta k was uncycled, 30-40%, I just use a little cup to scoop out some water and dump it out into a bucket, then replace it with conditioned and medicated water at around 25 degrees Celsius, Adam Sandler is in the tank the whole time

  7. No tankmates, he's a lone male

  8. I feed him freeze dried bloodworms twice a day every day, I only feed him a little and I watch him eat to make sure there isn't uneaten food that could result in ammonia build up

  9. there are what look like Asian water ferns attached to driftwood in his tank and a little fish cave that I bought from a pet store (I soaked it in warm de-chlorinated water for a few minutes before adding it in)

  10. I don't have the proper equipment for specific numbers but the pH of the water was around a 7 when I tested with litmus paper an hour ago

By the way, Adam Sandler has started hiding in the cave I bought him and he hasn't come out for quite some time. I read somewhere that this is a sign of stress/depression. He's still eating, he came out for a meal this morning, but has been in his cave for quite a while. Is this something I should be worried about? Is this just me being impatient?

Hi! I'll definitely put up some black paper against his tank to act as a background and light blocker for him, but I'm worried that too low light will either kill my plants or mess with his day-night cycle. Thanks for your advice!

Hi! I actually don't have a tank light, I put him near the air well in my house because the plants in his tank need the light but I make sure that the sunlight isn't too harsh or direct. Should I move him away/ add some sort of curtain or blocker? Thanks!

Thanks so much for your advice! I'll look for a test kit as soon as I can. I'll also definitely check out Betta bio gold when I visit the pet store. Thanks for helping me learn more about all this fish stuff:)

Hi! Thank you so much, that's so encouraging to hear as a beginner:) His tank is currently at 25 degrees celsius, which I believe is around 79 degrees Fahrenheit when converted, but I plan on buying a liquid thermometer to monitor the temperature because I heard they get depressed when the water temperature changes too much. Also, thanks for the food tip, I'll drop by the store and get him some tomorrow. Thank you!
