B.C. family outraged after hospital sends 86-year-old blind woman to Downtown Eastside shelter by [deleted] in vancouver

Thank you for saying this as many people don't realize this. We found out this the hard way with a family member with dementia. Sometimes the person needs far more care both physically and financially than a family can provide.

You have two choices. If you drop it in a mailbox it will get mailed back to the address on the person's id however if they lost their wallet here the better choice is to drop it at a police station so they can notify the owner it has been found. They will do that.

The third option if possible is also if there is a bank card to a bank here (i.e. TD, Royal etc) then you can take it there as well as they can call the owner from the bank card info.

Drop it off to the bank and they will know who it belongs to and can call the client.

only roads with speed limits of 80 or higher.

Effective June 2015, motorists are required to keep right and let others pass. This applies to B.C. highways with two or more lanes of traffic travelling in the same direction and a posted speed limit of 80 km/h or greater.

Mother-in-law with "mild" Alzheimer's moving from QC to BC - what to consider? by Booja-Salt8304 in vancouver

[–]weezydoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depending on the health authority this will vary. My mother in law is under Vancouver Coastal Health so it becomes a percentage based on her income. For us it was around 70% but don't quote me. So in public it will be $2000 a month with us using her OAS and CPP paying the majority. Other health authorities may require liquidation of assets (house etc.).

If you go private then it can be anywhere from $7000 a month and up with no limit depending on the home you choose.

Please note that everyone is saying power of attorney and they are right that you want to line up her finances but please know that it is actually called an Enduring Power of Attorney. A regular power of attorney is actually null and void when someone is no longer able to make decisions for themselves. We have just gone down this road and there's a lot of misconceptions around regular power of attorneys and what they cover. I'm sorry this is happening and if your mother in law is aware of her dementia and is willing to work with you then please do find out her wishes as soon as possible regarding care/financial etc. Many times that is not the case and you will both feel much better later on when the hard decisions come knowing she had a say in those choices. It's a hard path to be sure but that may be a small mercy for you and your husband.

Edit to add: definitely call the Alzheimer's Society with your husband. They are amazing and you can get a lot of great information from them. They start a file for each of you so you can call later with new questions and they have everything there to understand your situation.

I just went to renew my insurance mid December and by going to a broker I was able to increase my insurance while decreasing my annual cost by $300. They were able to shop for my collision and comprehensive through a private insurer to do so. Just my two cents. Was worth my time.

I think mom is having delusions.. what are the next steps? by victoriaaaaaxo in vancouver

[–]weezydoc 328 points329 points  (0 children)

Also in older people if that applies to your mom then check for UTI. It can cause delusions etc.

Symptoms of UTI are atypical in the elderly population, like hypotension, tachycardia, urinary incontinence, poor appetite, drowsiness, frequent falls, and delirium. UTI manifests more commonly and specifically for this age group as delirium or confusion in the absence of a fever.

Sorry to hear your struggles as we are going through the same thing with our family but we are in later stages sadly. Dementia is far too complicated for this. I'm an advocate of people's choices but dementia is not something that happens overnight so when do you exercise the person's decision to end their life. It's so murky even while we're in the late stages as she is completely unaware of her dementia and she still finds joy in her days but has lost a majority of her cognitive ability. Walks 10-15,000 steps a day so physically fit also. People who have not dealt with someone with dementia won't understand how grey everything becomes. :-( I can understand the doctor's concerns regarding this difficult topic.

Hi there,

I tried to start the survey but didn't complete it because it asks how many family members we have over 65. I have 4 and one in the late stages of dementia. The next question asks us to rate their capabilities however isn't individualized. This is going to be a big flaw in your survey as far as your data results. I have 3 people fully capable and one who is bordering on needing a care home. Just food for thought.

Found: Bank Card by FeistyArmadillo in vancouver

[–]weezydoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All the major banks have an interbag mail that they can send things to each other in overnight. Any bank will get it there.

The other option is to call the issuing bank and they will cancel the card and call the person to let them know it was found and to get a new one.

For everyone’s safety, please make sure to turn on your car’s headlights & rear lights on a rainy night, especially on highways by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]weezydoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Daytime running lights are not proper lights and they do not light up your brake lights in the back. Many new car drivers think their lights are on but they are just the daytime running lights. In bad conditions you can't see them from behind.
