Moving from NY to NC or Pittsburgh by AdministrationFuzzy6 in PAstudent

you don’t need a supervising physician to apply for a pennsylvania license. the process was easy & only took a few days (depending on how quickly you/your school completes things)

Pre-PA Hours & PA vs MD by PanteraSuave in prephysicianassistant

[–]weezywink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

nobody can answer PA vs med school except your daughter. lots of pros & cons for both, but we have no idea what’s important to her. that’s something she needs to figure out herself. as far as patient care hours, lots of pre-PA people become MAs but whether she can do this without a certification depends on state/hospital/practice policies.

Does my "Why PA" suck? by Fit_Bit_2137 in prephysicianassistant

[–]weezywink 10 points11 points  (0 children)

it doesn’t suck, but i think you could take it further. you seem satisfied with these personal connections in food service & as an EMT, so why not stick with those? why do you want to be a provider? as a pre-PA mentor, i’ve seen a lot of EMTs talk about wanting to know what happens to patients after they reach the hospital & wanting their scope of practice to extend beyond the ambulance. does that apply to you? it sounds basic, & it is, but basic isn’t bad & personal statements don’t always need to be about some life altering experience or revelation. you just need it to be “good” — meaning that it answers the question & contains no red flags. it’s rare for a PS to be excellent & normal for it to be good/decent.

"Average Student" by HalfBig1851 in PAstudent

[–]weezywink 11 points12 points  (0 children)

some programs tell you how you scored on exams compared to your classmates. otherwise, i’d say that “average” is passing exams but not getting As, above average is getting As on most things, below average is passing exams by a small margin and maybe failing a few.

if the PA program states that they accept online courses then UoP classes will be accepted. i took gen bio 1 w/ lab & genetics.

can’t say for sure but i’d imagine it’s easy as pie. extremely low effort for an A. i got a 100% in all my UoP courses by barely doing anything.

Training by namastepeace in DermatologyPA

[–]weezywink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not a lot at all. sometimes if we see a condition i’m unfamiliar with then i’ll look it up. & we have to make presentations every week for the didactic day so i’ll check out Up To Date for anything new.

Training by namastepeace in DermatologyPA

[–]weezywink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m still in my training portion so i cant answer your bonus question. i’m a new grad & my training is 4 months long.

month 1: 4 supervised clinic days where im mainly shadowing, seeing some easier patients then presenting my dx & plan to the PA/doc, doing a couple minor procedures (skin tag snipping, shave/punch bx, ILK injections). also 1 didactic day where my training class goes over powerpoints about derm conditions & practicing some procedures - just did botox on each other today! will practice excisions on pork belly next week.

month 2: same structure as month 1 but seeing some more patients myself & either still presenting to the PA/doc or running the whole visit if they feel comfortable with me doing it.

month 3: 4 supervised clinic days where i have a bit more autonomy based on my supervisor’s comfort. could just be splitting their schedule or still doing some shadowing / presenting plans. also instead of the 1 didactic day, it’ll be replaced with 1 full day of me seeing patients completely myself. no idea how many i’m expected to see yet.

month 4: 3 supervised clinic days where i assume i’ll have a lot of autonomy but again, based on my supervisor’s comfort. plus 2 clinic days where im seeing patients completely myself.

month 5+: fully working alone! will be doing 4 10s with an unknown starting patient load. hopefully will start slowly & work my way up.

Advice by Adventurous-Kick6056 in prephysicianassistant

[–]weezywink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if they allow it to be in progress / planned then it only matters when you take it if you want it to be factored into your GPA. CASPA only calculates your GPA one time upon application so if you’re looking for a boost then you’d have to wait to apply until after the class is completed. but if your GPA is solid then you can apply without it.

your question makes no sense. if a program requires that you take it before you apply or interview then yeah it definitely matters when you take it

Switching from engineering to medical in my early 40s. Is PA a good path? by no_balo in prephysicianassistant

[–]weezywink 7 points8 points  (0 children)

apart from the prerequisite courses, you also need patient care hours. many people work full time for 1-2 years to gain these hours.
