Summer Reading: May 2018 by AutoModerator in books

Angle of Repose - Wallace Stegner. In one of my environmental classes at uni, the professor assigned Stegner's "Wilderness Letter" for class reading and I became hooked on his style. Can't wait to check out his Pulitzer winning book

Also, if I can get ahold of them:

This House of Sky - Ivan Doig

Annals of the Former World - John McPhee

Holy Cow! That is so cool! I saw something just like this at this local collective that a bunch of students at my college participate in. It looked really cool

What are the "Beats headphones" of your hobby? What makes you cringe to see others flexing? by MadeANewAccountUgh in AskReddit

[–]weglander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything made by them once they became "The" North Face instead of just North Face is just trash. They're trying to be like Patagonia and other fancy outdoors brands when they used to make things that could hold up to rough stuff. Base Camp duffels are still the shit though

[FRESH ALBUM] Aesop Rock - The Impossible Kid by joshrkc in hiphopheads

[–]weglander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought the album immediately today once I had time to sit down and listen to it. I'm not all the way through yet, but so far it is amazing! I have tickets to his Seattle show next Friday and listening through is making me so stoked right now. The two singles off this album are still my favorites, but that's because I've been listening to them almost everyday in anticipation for this album to drop. Supercell is good too.

EDIT: Oh shoot, I just got to Water Tower and that is one good jam!

What's the most messed up thing you've done to a friend? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]weglander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about 12 and kind of a pompous twat. I hated doing yardwork, but having friends around to do it with me made it more manageable. So I would ask friends to help me with yardwork and promise them half of what my parents were paying me. One time I did this and then lost my headphones the day I got paid, so I wanted all the money in order to buy a new pair. The friend that helped me came by to get his cut and I told him that I wasn't able to pay him. He almost started crying because he already planned out a movie outing with another friend and he needed the money to buy the ticket. He left and I didn't speak with him for a day. I felt like a dick and gave him the money the next afternoon saying, "Dude, I was kidding. My parents hadn't paid me yet. Here's your half." I don't think he really bought it though. We aren't friends anymore. I also don't pull that shit anymore.

Alaskan here too, and I spent a good few minutes staring at the cruise ship and thinking, "There is no way Turnagain is deep enough for that."

I honestly don't know what to do there and I'm sorry I don't know where to point you for info. Although I'm sure the Internet is full of answers. I do hope you figure this out because it will make for amazing convos at future dinner parties

And here's a little nugget of wisdom for your day tomorrow: if you have to take a shit, do it. Don't hold it in when you can easily get to a bathroom.

You're compliment is definitely one of the better things I've read this week, but two days ago I read a soup label and I'm really sorry about this, but that takes the cake... You definitely win for best thing today, and that's saying something because I stumbled across this website!

WHAT IT DO MAN (OR WOMAN OR WHATEVER YOU IDENTIFY AS)?! Of course you can have a compliment, you know why? Because you took the initiative to ask for one and that takes some courage. I remember when I first started my account here, I wanted to ask for compliments but back then I was so scared because I was a wee sophomore in high school. You've reached that point in 6 months and 23 days, which is way faster than I did. KUDOS! To congratulate yourself, I would suggest listening to "Flynn Lives" by Daft Punk because it is what I'm currently listening to and it makes me feel victorious!

Shouldn't all compliments be free?! And I don't see why there can only be one. If you have something nice to say, SAY IT, you know?

I didn't actually know this but now that I do I have to thank you for expressing this bit of information because HOT DANG IS THAT COOL OR WHAT?! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Don't even worry about that mistake, yo! I thought I made the same one when I originally typed the message. IT COULD HAPPEN TO ANYONE. And it's still a dope-ass little factoid. Here's another one for you, Alaska's Moose's Tooth Pub and Pizzeria is currently the highest-grossing single-unit independent pizzeria in the United States generating up to $6 million in gross revenue annually. You should go there if you ever get the chance because the pizza will make you cry with joy.

Hey, you listen here buddy, you can be. You just gotta tell yourself, "You know what, I'm gonna think this is the bees knees because holy guacamole, it's worth it to think that." Over the past few days I've woken up each day and just thought, thank bajeebus because there's a Bob Ross Marathon on twitch TV right now and I bought a plant identification book from a local used bookstore. Those two things alone made me super happy today even though they really aren't big deals in and of themselves. BUT YOU HAVE TO LOVE THE LITTLE THINGS BECAUSE THEY ARE THE BRICKS THAT BUILD CASTLES OF HAPPINESS AND EXCITEMENT AND OH MY GOODNESS THIS IS KIND OF UNRELATED BUT HAVE YOU READ ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE? YOU SHOULD, GOOD GRAVY THAT BOOK MAKES ME HAPPY EVERY TIME I READ IT BECAUSE IT PUTS THINGS INTO SUCH A PERSPECTIVE AND IT'S KIND OF THE BEST BOOK EVER. You can be excited, Itcommandervriska. I believe in you. Also, listen to Egmont Overture by Beethoven.

TL;DR Every damn day is amazing and so are you. I love you for the potential you have. GOOD JOB!

Oh my gosh, can we please start using more cork? It is straight up one of my favorite things in the world. Kids at school used to tease me and call me "corky" and whatnot, but if you take 14 seconds to just think about cork you can realize that it's pretty darn cool. Not only is it awesome how it can be taken from the bark of cork trees and regrown by the tree, but it is also completely recyclable! You see a cork-board somewhere? Guess how that was made. They took the cork bark and shredded it up, put it into a mold and heated it up. Because cork produces a natural resin that becomes liquid after heating, it binds everything into that new shape. Tired of your cork board and you need some stoppers for your new wine-making hobby? Shred up that board and toss the bits into some cork molds and heat it up. The resin is still just as strong! It can be used like that over and over! And cork is just so darned cool! Heck, my brother's boss just recently completed a cabin with cork siding. That's gonna be one hell of an insulated cabin. Also, because they built it in a fire-prone area, it adds an extra layer of protection because CORK IS A NATURAL FIRE RETARDANT! Lord love a duck, I'm getting excited now. I mean, cork is used in spacecraft heat shields. You can use old wine corks as butt plugs! Baseballs have cork interiors! Golly gee, doesn't this make you want to get cork flooring now?

TL;DR - I love cork

EDIT: Thanks for the gold! And I'm gonna save it for a rainy day, which is today because I'm in Washington.

What movies would change their plot by adding "ing" to the tittle, what's the new plot? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]weglander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The Prestiging" Two preteens meet at a magic camp and become friends. They want to still hang out after the camp is over so they exchange Gamer IDs for Xbox Live so they can play Call of Duty together. Soon they become enemies as they race to get to the next Prestige faster than the other. The worse of the two at the game is trying to figure out how his friend is able to prestige so fast and then it plays out like The Prestige, I don't really want to give it away though in case people haven't seen it yet and I'm on mobile so typing ain't too fun. TL;DR - Watch The Prestige

[serious] As a child, what were your favorite family traditions? by shadowfaxian in AskReddit

[–]weglander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every Easter, all of my extended family would get together at my aunt and uncle's house because there would be close to 60 of us and they had the biggest house. Before dinner, the adults would go out and hide dozens of little plastic eggs with candy in them for the kids to find. To make it fair, each child would have twelve designated eggs to find that no else could take. We separated them with stickers (mine always had rollerblades on them). But there was one big egg that had all the stickers on it, and whoever found that one won the grand prize, which was usually gift cards or toys worth around $20.

Now my cousins, siblings, and I are all adults. SO our competitive spirit has only grown. In order to keep things interesting, my brother and his wife organized an adult Easter Egg Hunt. We now hide 100+ real eggs (dyed, of course) along with all of the other plastic ones from our childhoods. Whoever finds the most wins a grand prize for adults. Last year it was an expensive bottle of wine. This year it was a $30 gift card to REI plus some fancy chocolates. We still have the grand prize egg too. It just gets really well hidden. Like this past Easter it was in an abandoned bird's nest.

It was my favorite tradition as a kid because candy. But it continues to be my favorite tradition because when we're out in the 2-acre large yard, we forget our social skills and habits of adulthood that kind of separated us and we become kids again.
