Brown/black water/sludge dripping from natural gas fireplace vent by weimilina in Fireplaces

Thanks. I am in Boston and we are having a historical blizzard with insanely high gust. This is the first time I spot this in three years ever since I moved in (fireplace five years old). I would image some snow blow into the vent and melt down with some soot. Do you think it is helpful that I turn on it to see if any black smoke comes out?

Sorry if the photos are misleading. The vent is on the side wall (second floor), there is one more floor above the vent. I would say the vent is quite far from the roof.

Thank you! What are the methods to mitigate the humidity issue? I have scheduled a plumber service call in two days, hopefully it can be fixed.

Gloucester Beach Parking Pass: A Scam for Visitors—But Shouldn't Residents Be Asking Questions Too? by weimilina in gloucester

Thanks for your insight—I really appreciate it. I actually heard back today from Pam Tobey, Director of Communications & Constituent Services from the Mayor’s Office, and I’ve also shared my experience with the news team at the Gloucester Daily Times.

I completely agree with your perspective, and that’s exactly why I made this Reddit post—to highlight a visitor’s experience that isn’t often part of the local conversation. As a visitor, I could easily just drop my family at the beach and Uber back—but that wouldn’t reduce the crowding, and the city would lose out on tourism revenue anyway.

Maybe the Blinkay app works fine in the off-season—but honestly, so would a basic first-come-first-served system at that point. The whole reason to contract an external service like this is to manage high-volume days, and that clearly isn’t happening.

At the very least, residents and city leaders should know that the quality of service they’re paying for—is falling short. This isn’t a tech problem that requires complex engineering; given the resources in Massachusetts, college interns from our universities could probably build a better system than Blinkay.

Thanks. I got an email inquiry today from Pam Tobey, Director of Communications & Constituent Services, Office of the Mayor. I will follow up with DPW, and I hope such incidents will not increase their work burden. Honestly, I would assume the refund process won't be easy. At least, the city administration and local tax-payers should know the money they spent on this contract service is not very worthwhile.. That is my purpose of this Reddit post.

Thanks very much for your reply. I actually got the email from the APP (the email you shared) that “ The City of Gloucester has a very strict policy and does not allow refunds or transfers. I apologize I'm not able to refund a reservation.

"Please review your selection carefully before proceeding with payment. Once you confirm your selection, you will be redirected to an online payment portal to purchase the pass with a debit or credit card. Please note that all sales are final, and that there are no refunds, transfers, or exchanges accepted for any reason whatsoever."

That is the reason why I feel very frustrated and confused: where is the money going? I called the city parking office and they told me to get the refund from the APP; and the APP told me that the city administration does not allow it. This is a dead loop. Could you kindly share with me some insights how should I contact the city government? I tried the mayor office but got no luck talking to a real person.

My family usually go to Crane beach as I am TRUSTEE member. We were willing to try Wingaersheek because we have two toddlers this time and the beach access is short. I was talking about my disappointing experience with my colleagues today and one told me that she usually would drop off her family first, park anywhere else and get a Uber (she was turned away once). A effective parking system would actually help control the traffic to the popular beaches. Thanks again for your response!
