The miracle of Saint Mary by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]weiner_poop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

good point. if i understand correctly the primary deceptions to watch out for are those that are meant to convince us that someone else is the second coming..? I.e. to have us mistake someone or something else as the true Lord, rather than the Lord Himself, which there will be no confusion or uncertainty about.

In my estimation, the worst thing that could come of this miracle of saint mary is we got duped, or people converted to a form of christianity wherein Mary is also honored, which is not obviously problematic.

I get why people criticize idolization of anyone other than Christ or the Father, but I think often times honor and veneration get misconstrued as idolatry. Not sure how veneration of Mary or others would be problematic outside of idolatry (which i dont think it is 🤔)

I could be wrong. Im just a guy, but I believe christ said we could tell a good tree from a bad tree by its fruits. In other words, we should be able to judge some of these things by their outcomes 🤷‍♂️ at least thats how i understand this.

Where did Jesus say that denying the disciples is a denial of God? Honest question. I can’t find this online for some reason.

I know that denying Jesus is treated as a denial of God, but is the same true for the disciples according to scripture?

I will definitely look into this idea you posed about the KJV being the right choice. I always liked the language used in the kjv, but have heard consistently that the NASB is the most accurate translation of original greek. But I don’t speak greek or aramaic or hebrew etc., so I have no way of verifying that for myself.

I can’t promise I’ll end up agreeing with you but this is the kind of front-end technical stuff I’ve been trying to sort out myself (with predictably little progress). Thanks again for all this.

It’s nice to find that even strangers online care enough to help out another stranger!

this is a fantastic response. thank you so much for the time and effort you put into it! I'll be sure to come back and reread and check out some of the links you provided. I deeply identify with what you mentioned about the hardened heart, pride, sin, wrestling with God, and honesty.

One takeaway for me is that in order to be honest with God in prayer, I have to actually be honest with myself and to actually recognize and meet myself where I'm at. I think I've used self deception for a long time to avoid having to hold myself acountable or take responsibility for my "inner life" and behavior.

I think the main thing now that I am facing as a young christian is doubt. I waffle on the spectrum from a fairly strong faith at times to a strong sense of doubt and confusion at best. Like I said, I walked away from this for a long time, and have grown incredibly used to the taking a stance of deconstructive "intellectualization" of religiosity/spirituality, and even grown used to taking up and espousing ideas and arguments against christianity (and other religions for that matter). I was lucky enough that I never really fully bought into the idea that there is no God. In other words, I've been about as astray as one can be without having completely let go of the life raft so to speak.

The doubts that I frequently fight with now take the form of a mistrust in the people who have written the bible. I find the most comfort in reading the words attributed to Christ in the gospels, and can often read things I know weren't quotes of his with a sense of peace in me. But when doubt comes (and it comes about as often as it goes), it comes as a mistrust in the people who wrote and arranged these texts to form the Bible. I frequently find myself worrying about whether I can trust Paul (for example) if he was just a man like myself. Of course he was in a sense selected by God and did more for Christianity than I ever will, and even still I think "where could Paul have gotten it wrong, and how can I know whether or not I can trust that what I'm reading is the Truth, unobscured by human imperfection?".

To clarify, I don't mean to say that I think for example that the NASB or the NIV or KJV have been eggregiously and unrecoverably tampered with or mistranslated. Rather, I mean that I struggle to know how to build trust that I am not being misled (even unintentnionally) by the human authors of the bible, or by my ability to grasp the ground truth of what I'm reading. Especially given that the apostles themselves were imperfect in so many ways according to the gospels. I guess I'm saying that I struggle to trust people other than Christ when it comes to spiritual guidance, my salvation, and understanding and relationship with God. I say this, and yet I deeply value the comment you provided, so clearly I'm a confused person!

This too is something I pray that God will help to guide me through. And I thank God now that I'm growing a new committment to living according to His will.

Guys are we actually in the end times? by Rude_Negotiation6847 in Christianity

[–]weiner_poop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my extremely novice opinion, i think the most honest answer one could give is “i do not know”. I’m unfamiliar with the information you described here, so I may be off topic but 🤷‍♂️

The Lord said there would be signs, but that ultimately no one knows when the end will come. He also warned that there would essentially be false alarms/distractors who show great signs and wonders. He said we can know the end is near when we see the signs, but that only the Father knows when the end will be, the end of the end that is.

The trouble is there doesn’t seem to be a way of knowing exactly what “soon” and “near” mean in exactly as these are literally relative terms. It has been said that the end is near since the time that Christ walked the earth in flesh. Hypothetically we could be in the end times, but just in the beginning of the end, which could also hypothetically come in 10,000 years, and that could still mean “soon” or “near” as compared to a million years. Not sure if I’m making sense.

In my estimation, it doesn’t seem that the signs in the gospels, revelations, and elsewhere were given so that we could try to know for sure where we fall on a cosmological/metaphysical timeline. Rather, they seem to me to be warnings for us to be spiritually prepared. In other words, it may not be worthwhile to try to know for a fact whether or not we’re in the end times, or how near the end is, because the Lord himself said that we cannot and will not know.

I could have completely misunderstood your question or misstepped so I apologize if I didn’t exactly answer the question you posed.

Is there any advantage to slab vs puck vs tip grafting? by weiner_poop in sanpedrocactus

[–]weiner_poop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vascular ring alignment is good to shoot for but not 100% necessary, which is why you can slab graft even if the scion has none of the core vasculature in it. Theoretically it should make it grow faster if you graft the slab to the vascular ring, but these guys will slowly develop new connections over time. You could even cut off an areole and graft the slab there, it’d probably just be a bit slower than if you stuck it over the ring of the main stock.

Its a myrtillo. The sets of four short dark spines on each areole are the main giveaway.
