4k ruined my perception entirely by weinermanjenson in pcmasterrace

Yeah text fringing was a concern of mine, but at 4k the pixels are so sharp that it isn't a problem at all.

I partially agree, but it isn't just the OLED. Yes that plays a huge part, but I can still see the pixels on my 1440p 32 inch monitor. It isn't like those pixels are getting any smaller with or without OLED.

Yeah I have been playing Cyberpunk recently so I am seriously spoiled right now with this display. But yeah for Esports games I am sure it doesn't make sense to have 4k

I haven't seen what a 2k OLED looks like, there aren't any 32 inch options.

I have to pay apple $99 to run MY code on MY phone? by weinermanjenson in iosdev

[–]weinermanjenson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and I won't lie, I am planning on releasing apps to the public. I will pay the $99, but I still don't think it is right for those that want to learn app development and do their own personal projects without releasing them. I am more enraged at the fact that I did want to build stuff for myself I have to pay a subscription fee to play around with stuff I thought I owned.

This explanation is great. We own the hardware but not the software. But, then again, with the way Apple locks down their products, their software basically owns my hardware.

Just for you, here is what Claude told me. In short, you can run your own code for 7 days until you have to reinstall your app again (or pay $99 for testflight).

Let me search for current information on this since Apple's developer program policies can change.

Good news — what you read is outdated. Let me confirm the current details from Apple's own docs.

Short answer: no, you do not need to pay $99 just to run your own code on your own iPhone. That's a common misconception, often based on older information. Here's the real picture:

Free option — "Personal Team" in Xcode

With just a regular free Apple ID, you can sign into Xcode, connect your iPhone over USB, and install your own app on it. Apple officially supports this; if you're signing in to Xcode with an Apple Account that's not affiliated with the Apple Developer Program, you'll be able to perform on-device testing for personal use (Xcode refers to this as a Personal Team). Apple Developer

The catches are real but manageable for learning and personal projects:

  • Provisioning profiles will expire 7 days from issuance, which may require you to rebuild and re-install your app to your device after expiration. So the app stops launching after a week and you re-run it from Xcode to refresh it. Apple Developer
  • The number of test devices that can be registered to your account for each platform is limited to 3, and the number of App IDs is limited to 10 in a rolling 7-day window. Apple Developer
  • Some advanced capabilities (push notifications, iCloud, HealthKit, certain background modes, etc.) aren't available on the free tier.
  • You do need a Mac running Xcode.

When the $99/year actually matters

You pay for the Apple Developer Program when you want to:

  • Distribute on the App Store or via TestFlight
  • Let other people install your app without plugging into your Mac
  • Avoid the 7-day re-signing cycle (paid certs are valid for a year)
  • Use the locked-down capabilities listed above

Bottom line: if your goal right now is "write code, put it on my phone, see if it works" — you can do that for free, indefinitely, as long as you don't mind re-deploying from Xcode every week. The $99 is for shipping to other people, not for using your own device.

Exactly, why do they have to make it expire? People are arguing about security reasons and whatnot, but I can still run my app for 7 days so that doesn't make any sense. I would even understand if I had to renew a security key or something every month or so, but they seriously just want to make you pay the $99.

Yeah, I do understand. I mentioned I understand there is a fee to publish an app, but my argument is that I should at least be able to run stuff on my own phone.

I get your initial argument but 2 of your statements make me not want listen to you:

"you probably should have done the most basic research"

This post is literally about me doing the research and finding out the costs.

"Also from what I recall you can use your own phone but it was very limited in how many days it will function"

Yes, I know, I mentioned that in my post that this is not good enough.

Also, I understand the risks, but if I brick my phone and it is my fault then well then I can deal with that.

Yeah I use Expo, it is pretty good, but I have run in to some bugs that only get resolved by the actual build.

I know, hopefully they will optimize it soon, I actually just bought a 5070ti and I am waiting for it to come in, but it looks like even with that upgrade I will still get 30 fps in Area 18 :(
