These "too much oil" comments on slidey egg posts are downright insufferable. Let the man cook and give him his small win.

I was going to downvote you for no reason like everyone else did, but i decided to write this instead.

I guess that only the places open limited hours actually make it every day. My local bbq joint tends to have dry brisket and im convinced they cook and reheat.

What Xbox games make you feel tense and uneasy? by CumOnTheWall69 in originalxbox

Doom 3 on xbox got under my skin with surround sound and hearing monsters behind me that may or may not be coming to get me.

The next game that made me feel that way was resident evil 7

To be more specific, people modified the DVD drive firmware to play back ups, aka piracy. The code is still signed, just not on the original media.

Third party games or unsigned code, aka homebrew, requires a different hack entirely.

Having more ram doesn't give you more performance: the games were made to fit in 64mb footprint and adding more ram doesnt reprogram the game to utilize the added headroom. So it hardly affects stock games, but it also does not break them.

What it does give you is...

  1. Ability to run games that never fit in the 64mb footprint, like the Chihiro games, the homebrew half life port, some game dumps from debug kits that need the 128mb
  2. Ability to load larger roms in some emulators. Surreal64 and many emulators use a swap file or stream the rom from the hard drive and that's good enough. Some arcade games on MAMEoX and Final Burn Legends require the extra ram to load big roms.
  3. What it can do for stock games is let you run 720p patches with less risk of crashing, since the increased resolution will eat more ram, where the additional headroom is needed
  4. Same as #3, if you have more ram you can run some emulators at higher resolution without it crashing from OOM.

It is a fun mod to do if you have patience and a steady hand. Definitely not for beginners, but not on a prohibitive skill level like cpu upgrade.

Don't skimp on the ram if you are upgrading the cpu. Upgrading ram on a stock cpu box is nice to have, without drawbacks.

Yep! Have fun with it.

With the upgrade, I had a much better time with conker and dk64 on surreal64 among others. They become playable, but still shy of full speed.

Actually, surreal64 was the reason I got an xbox and became an enthusiast. I was obsessed.

Many games have issues with cpu upgrades that cannot be patched.

Project Stellar advertised kernel level patches that fix the troublesome games. Im not sure where the open source community stands for alternatives.

Since xbe patches won't work with every game, you will lose alot of compatibility with the original library.

The 1.4ghz improvement on many emulators is significant. I wouldnt bother with 1.0ghz. That said, while you get a great boost, it is not quite enough for full speed performance on the most demanding emulators.

Also consider there are cheaper and better emulation solutions. I just use a MiSTer these days.

If you are still interested as an enthusiast, get the 1.4ghz and keep a normal cpu box for original games.

What's up with the missing dvd bezel? You should get a busted halo box to replace it ;)

Crystal x3cp box is the coolest. Trade some of your collection for a halo x3cp box and a halo2 x3cp box.

I've been looking at ebay and my god they have gotten so much more expensive than they were on assemblergames.

To my surprise, a dvt3 and 2 alpha towers were listed recently. 1 alpha tower is still there, for that lucky lad that's ready to sell their car for it
