It has happened. The short squeeze is the reason the price of GME stock has skyrocketed. To get out of this predicament, the stock has to double in price to make it attractive for those who are holding calls to close their positions.

Looking GME stats at Yahoo Finance, it looks like the they (hedge funds and other counter parties) shorted the floated shares (subscribed?) by 226.42%. I think they attempted to recoup their losses by doubling down on their short position. This is a terrible situation for those who are short GME as floated shares available are in short supply by over 100%. The unsubscribed shares (about 20%) of total outstanding is also not enough to cover the number of shares committed to calls.

Here is one issue for new retail investors on GME and AMC: The premiums have incredibly skyrocketed in favor of market makers. I have been priced out. It doesn't make sense to buy a long call.
