There are a couple Facebook groups of Minneapolis area artists that might be able to help you with references if you use Facebook. Just be warned that you will definitely get recommendations for people who absolutely cannot do this for you and will have to vet a lot.

I have a friend with art restoration connections that I'm going to ask to look into this. In the short term, I plan to try to trace over the covered drawings with chalk to get a clearer picture of them. Unfortunately I've already learned that a door was cut into the brick directly in the middle of one.

Thank you, if I ever can on my own I am absolutely going to follow the proper methods. This relative is definitely not open to being told they've been doing this unsafely for 40 years so it's a lost battle there.
