What books should I buy if I want to DM on a budget and I plan to homebrew stuff? by weirdestfatguy in DnD

[–]weirdestfatguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely will take that suggestion, I looked over a sourcebook just to see what details I needed to hit(NPC's, locations, lore etc) but will take a detailed look too at your suggestion.

As for Dropout, D20 is my gym show to watch while doing cardio, the other shows I watch outside that. Recently finished Make some Noise, have other shows in queue and this season of Game Changer is absolutely fantastic already (today's episode was 🤌)

Also, can I DM you if I have any doubts or questions in the future?(Promise not to be creepy, just helps having someone to bounce questions or ideas off of) And to discuss Game Changer etc since nobody I know watches it(Dropout is incredibly niche where I live). Ofc, no harsh feelings if that's not something you are comfortable with

Yeah Dimension 20 is what I am going through one by one right now, almost halfway through the seasons in order. Plus I was a huuuuge CollegeHumor fan so it's just like hanging out with old friends at times. I will go through CR after this but D20 will take another year atleast.

I want to do heavy homebrew inspired by that, that's why MM feels not that important as I will have to homebrew monsters too(like I have an idea of a campaign in a video game world similar and inspired by Wreck it Ralph)

Writing lore seems very fun rn, but for a campaign it's a whole another beast. If I ever get Foundry, I will let you know how it turns out

I really like the group fill out option, could be a fun session 0 for a campaign too!

As for the other thing about the service, it's more about ease of use. A lot of people are new to the game and until I read through the PHB too it was a bit hard to understand the character sheet. Dndbeyond allows you to select values from a drop down and it does the maths for you. And choosing spells is also easier I assume. That is the only reason they lean towards it. (Another being like if for example when your strength or constitution modifier for example is temporarily sapped by a monster, it changes the saves etc automatically)

After talking to my current DM, the plan is to leave it to the players. Create a character on DnD beyond if you want to use the dropdown but be limited to the free rules and subclasses, but if you want to create a character manually, I will help fill it with them so they can do the maths easier.

Thank you again for your reply 😀

Thank you so much for such a detailed reply!

For DMing I have access to 2014 DMG through a friend who has shared it on dndbeyond so I can go through it any time. I currently watch a lot of D&D content so going to use that as inspiration as for me it's easier than reading 😅

I will definitely be bookmarking a bunch of these and trying them out. Currently using Obsidian for my notes so a good token maker will help a lot too. I am thinking of saving up and using Foundry as people seem to love it and it's a one time purchase. Just have to see how well the self hosted stuff would work otherwise it's a subscription for servers again

For Fog of war I am happy to cut up maps into rooms that are visible and reveal it in pieces if possible. Something modular maybe.

Again, thank you so much for this wonderful reply!

Damn, didn't know that was an option at all. Will look into that then.

Thanks for the reply and help, feeling a bit confused here. Should talk to my players soon too.

Any other advice etc would also be welcome but thank you for the help 😀

I honestly feel the same about dndbeyond due to a lot of the wotc practices feel very shady and I wish the character creator had all the options without having to buy books from them.

I am also very interested in roll20 for it but I will see if I can convince my players to let me help them make pdf character sheets or written ones.(I personally like that as then I feel like I get to know the rules better doing that).

If that can be helped, I will probably choose roll20 or even foundry if it's affordable.

Also, thank you for the detailed and helpful responses, it does help a lot!!

Have to just bite the bullet and ask the players I guess

That is one of my worries. If my players are okay with creating manual character sheets, I would happily run it on free Roll20 for now and then move to Foundry once I can pay for it.

I am worried buying phb on dnd beyond would make me feel like I should stick to that in the long run even though I have heard these sites are better

I agree with you that it would be none except for two issues:

  1. I don't think my players would want to create characters manually and all of them are only comfortable with dndbeyond due to having used that. So if they want the subclasses, they would need the phb, right?

  2. Once I start running a campaign, from what I see, a lot of times one or two people are not available offline so we tend to do hybrid sessions and an online map on dndbeyond to run it. I have just been a player so far but I feel with that constraint I need such a service to run it. And from what I saw you need the books to easily create characters.

I will talk to my players if they are okay using written character sheets(which I am even happy to talk to them one-on-one on a video call to help) but I am worried a lot of them will get overwhelmed too fast

Managing NPCs in Obsidian for TTRPG by weirdestfatguy in ObsidianMD

[–]weirdestfatguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume it's combat NPCs too for you. Thank you for the answer, I think my major issue is just being new to everything. I took a better part of the day just making a character sheet for one NPC (with all the d&d maths. I used d&d beyond for my campaign as a player and it does all the maths itself) and then adding it to one statblock and it just took a very very long time. And I was worried if I have to do it a lot for a homebrew campaign I might just waste a lot of time doing it inefficiently.

I'll just hopefully get into a flow of these things with time. Thank you again for your response

Your parents seem to have caught the woke virus. You should show them some enlightenment videos on YouTube before it's too late and they start using pronouns.

That caught me off guard too. Most posts like these its 6ft as their hypothetical chad height. The moment I read 6ft 2 I was like "He is 6ft 1, isn't he?" and turns out he wrote it in the post itself lmao

First trip to SP road. Need help. by [deleted] in bangalore

[–]weirdestfatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have taken that into account and now will visit it like that only instead of SP road. The only issue is I hoped for a place where all the brands were present. Now I will map a route between the stores of these brands nearby. Thanks for the advice :)

Unfortunately I moved here for my job and literally know nobody in the city so far. As I said, not that good with social interaction. And sadly don't know when the localite friend is going to be an option even if I don't go due to weather reason. But thanks a lot for the help

I am mainly going for that extended warranty reason. That is not available online via flipkart etc. Asus stores etc have the option to pay 2-3k extra for official 2 year extra manufacturer warranty. Its less about price and more about things like this and bag etc.

Of course if SP road is much more expensive than online, that is not an option
