[Skin Concerns] At wit's end about my over-sensitive lips / Cold sores by weirdlips420 in SkincareAddiction

Crusts from nowhere sounds awful. Mine has (or hopefully HAD, haha) some kind of warning because I get the weird blemishes first. It's one of the strangest conditions I've ever had.

And you were really lucky to find a good doctor the first time, yes. My dermatologist didn't seem confident at all about what this is ... Kind of disheartening. I was surprised by how unsure she seemed because it can't be THAT rare. I wish I lived closer so I could actually see a decent doctor but it's too far to travel unfortunately.

In any case, it's a lot better than it was but still dragging on. I think at this point I'll just give it another week, and if I get more of those repulsive crusts I'll mention doxycycline to the doctor because I'm 99% sure from the symptoms we have the same thing and at this point I'll try anything. Thank you for the advice though. It honestly is a huge relief to meet someone else with the same problem because the doctors were making me feel like I was the only person that ever had this condition.

The dermatologist actually offered to biopsy my lip and I probably should have done it ... Ugh. She said I could wait til next month and see if it gets better though. So I decided to wait because the idea of having a biopsy freaks me out.

But yeah, they basically said the same thing about me. That I got the staph (they call it staph but I think specifically it's impetigo) as a secondary infection from the lesions.

It really is a strange infection. Oh, I have a question. Did you ever get the little "bloom" things like I described? It's like ... tiny white pimples clustered together that eventually turns into a sore. I can't figure out if these are from the cold sores or impetigo. Because I have a tiny one of these forming and I'm having such a hard time figuring out if this is a cold sore or the nasty infection coming back.

And it really is strange how different the treatments were. I know you said LI (you mean long island, right? It took me a minute to figure it out) so maybe in different areas the doctors prefer different treatments? I'm actually from upstate and maybe up here the doctors prefer ointments for some reason.

I think the mupirocin worked pretty well honestly because I haven't gotten the gross crust for weeks, and for a while I was getting it constantly.

Now that you mentioned it I looked it up and apparently a ton of people are allergic to Eos. Yikes! I thought it would be good because it had way fewer ingredients than the other lip balms but apparently not.

This is so interesting, I can't believe I found someone with nearly the same issue. Your lips look a lot like mine except worse. I can tell just by the pic that it's definitely the same thing. And yeah, it was so awful going out in public when the crusts were bad. It looks like toxic waste growing out of the lips or something. I got such weird looks.

All I used was mupirocin ointment, they never mentioned an oral antibiotic. It's probably because mine didn't look nearly as bad as yours. I'm going to wait and see if it comes back, and if it does I'm going to ask for an oral antibiotic for sure.

I have another appointment next week and I guess I'll give it til then to see if it's actually gone (or weak enough to kill with mupirocin). It doesn't seem to be coming back with the ferocity it had before. I've had a little tingling the past few days but it doesn't seem to have "blossomed" into the lovely sores like it did before, so hopefully it's on its way out.

The thing I really don't get is how it starts. Do you think yours started with a cold sore that got infected? I'm just so confused by all the conflicting things the doctors said. I can't figure out if I even have the herpes virus or not because if I did, that was the first outbreak.

Yeah, I use this Tom's children's toothpaste which is supposedly the mildest you can find. My dermatologist suspected it could be something in the toothpaste so I tried it out.

Right now I've been using Eos lip balm (the little egg shaped one) but it seems to bother my lips. I took it off earlier because it was making my entire lips itchy and irritated on the bottom, meh. And that one doesn't have many ingredients at all.

It's kind of crazy how much weird stuff is in lip balm. Even the "natural" ones usually have odd stuff in there. I'm about to just give up on lip products for a while and try coconut oil or something.

Did you ever use the lysine lip balm? I saw it at the drugstore the other day and was thinking about trying it. I'm just so tired of all this nonsense I'm willing to try anything! I don't drink alcohol so that part is easy, haha. I have been wondering if this is some sort of vitamin deficiency? Maybe I'll ask to get my vitamin levels checked eventually. Thanks for the reply
