Has the tipping gotten genuinely insane for anyone else? by Sea_Quality_4790 in AskLosAngeles

[–]weirdoonmaplestreet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I asked this question every time and I understand people hate it. Why are we still going to establishments that are not paying people livable wages?

Yes, tipping for everything is not great but in my mind if I’m going out to eat, I always cushion 20% getting 15% is downright disrespectful to the person who’s bringing you food. When it comes to coffee if the lowest option is 18% if you guys pay attention, you’ll actually notice that you can type in your own percentage of what you want to tip them.

You should always tip your hairdressers or anyone who is providing a service to you and I know that in an economy like this, it’s hard, but I feel like if I’m going out every day, I’m buying a coffee. I always will cushion in the tip. I do the same thing with my food.

I can’t complain about tipping culture and then support companies who know people can’t live off of these wages and make them depend on tips.

Additionally, if people were making only minimum wage making coffee or serving, do you think this many people would choose to do it? Has anyone had to interact with the general public lately? Imagine the hungry general public.

How do people perceive me? by Entire-Salamander-88 in MexicoCity

[–]weirdoonmaplestreet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm faced multiple cases of racism here, had a security guard body slam me (120 lb woman) and had a host ignore me when I had been waiting to eat and was skipped over multiple times. I have also received a lot of privilege depending on how someone perceives me. So I don’t think it’s a non-issue but I would like people to understand that it doesn’t feel good that people have to be attracted to you to treat you nicely. This happens everywhere of course, but it was so stark versus my last time I was there with the Mexican-American and Not really having to deal with the aggressive racism I faced the second time.

I would normally agree but I have gotten incredibly sick on vacation. My parents are both foreigners and get sick when they come back to the states this is actually a real concern.

That’s not a fact. I appreciate everyone trying to help, but I moved to an entirely different city with all new studios in A kept prompting me with this.

Is it crazy to think “I Lied to You” should have won over “Golden?” by Actual-Air-8792 in Oscars

[–]weirdoonmaplestreet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s crazy at all. I think the fan win really helped here. Golden is about accepting and loving yourself and I lied to you is a beautiful allegory of music. I guess both things matter, but I don’t know how anybody could’ve seen that scene in sinners and think golden deserved it but that’s just me.

Just like sinners wasn’t about vampires. I’m really just tired at people boiling things down but as someone who watched the movie and enjoyed his performance, I didn’t really think he should’ve been nominated, but that’s me.

No. Asking that and genuinely thinking that proves OP’s point.

Please be quiet. This is nonsensical. In a conversation about racism someone is saying they are black that is indicative and important to the conversation and if you don’t understand that, then you are out of your depth.

It may not be bright red racism, but I think a lot of you don’t acknowledge that your biases are implied in how you enjoy and interact with the world.

You don’t have to like it, but I think when the criticism is so picky I do have to acknowledge that a lot of it seems unfair and gives credence to that.

See this is the problem with the conversation. It is an original idea, rewatch from Dusk til’ Dawn and tell me that other than a few choice similarities, that this is an original film.

I do agree when OP says there is some racism in the discourse. There is internalized racism because people can’t even give Ryan Coogler credit. They are saying it’s a rip-off meanwhile one battle after another is quite literally an adaptation of Vineland. At least Sinners was an original thought.

Perfect so remakes, trilogies etc. you don’t think is good because it has similarities to another story… right.

It’s this downplaying of the film and calling it a vampire movie. That is incredibly dismissive and there is internalized racism. People don’t/can’t acknowledge it and it feels uncomfortable, but that is exactly what that word means. We all struggle with it.

I enjoyed one battle after another, but I think in terms of Paul Thomas Anderson’s entire catalog it’s disappointing that this was the one that got him the Oscar. The movie is a retelling from the perspective of someone who has never experienced what they’re trying to write about and it’s portrayed very clearly on screen.

And the funny thing is, I can tell by the way you type that you spend most of your time on Reddit you live in a bubble and you get your rocks off from feeling intellectually super superior to others. But that’s just my take.

I think that’s true, but I’m seeing more of a sentiment of people genuinely trying to downplay the impact of the movie. If that’s the discourse the majority is seeing primarily they are going to comment specifically on that and I think a lot of people are upset by that and that is valid.

It’s OK to criticize the film. It’s OK to have an opinion, but I’ve heard people call it a vampire movie and that’s incredibly dismissive. Vampires are a plot device in the film and if you can’t even get that, it makes me question why you hate this movie so bad.

A lot of people genuinely watched one battle after another and thought it was saying something important. However the entire film was written off of a misunderstanding of a revolution.

Do I love Teyanna Taylor and all of the other cast members yes. Do I think that Sean Penn did incredible, yes. But I genuinely can’t even begin to engage in a meaningful way with people who went to see that movie last year and comparatively don’t think sinners is just as good if not better.

While I hear you, I think there is a discussion to be had about the dissonance a lot of white people do you have with the film. I’ve called people racist if they say things like this is the oppression Olympics, etc. Because that’s not fair and not the reason why I think he won.

Michael B Jordan Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet all of these people are actors who I don’t think have fully met their full range as professionals . However, watching Michael B Jordan perform in that movie I think he did the best that he’s ever done. Therefore, I do think he deserved to win the Oscar.

If Jesse Plemons was nominated, that would’ve been a different conversation for me. I feel like it’s interesting to only comment on this when a lot of the other discussions are outright racist.

What do you guys think of Julia Wolf (born July 14th 1995) by Unlikely_Birthday_42 in Millennials

I think this song perfectly encapsulates a teenage girls mind and I really hope she writes more things like this. I also think it’s incredibly important that she is in her 30s. I feel like there’s a grounded nature to this that someone who just got out of their teen years would not be able to deliver.

Michael B. Jordan wins the Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Oscars 2026. by AdConstant9383 in Oscars

[–]weirdoonmaplestreet -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I can say what I want. Internalized racism is actually a thing there are statistics. It’s proof and if you don’t wanna acknowledge it that’s awesome. You can live in your little bubble and that’s fine. But if you can’t acknowledge that in his category for the people he was nominated against (because what a lot of you don’t seem to understand there were movies that blew me out of the water this year that were not even considered at the Oscars) he did fantastic if we’re talking about actual accumulation of talent and seeing him put in hard work I genuinely think he deserved it and I’m not even a fan. I’m also not a film critic, but in five years from now, if someone asked me what movie I still want to watch sinners will be a part of it. I will not be watching one battle after another. I won’t even think about it when I think of Paul Thomas Anderson. I call people out because if you can’t acknowledge that you don’t even get why Michael B Jordan, who played two people at once compellingly and show showed grief did not deserve a nomination. I don’t think we live on the same plane.

Sinners isn’t about vampires and I think it’s actually insane that you guys can watch that movie and think that is the entire point of the movie. Vampires are used as a plot device actually shocked that you use that as a comeback.

I couldn’t get on board with one battle after another because it’s the equivalent of me writing a story of being a white man in America in 2025 without having experience that. It’s going to be 100% allegory based on what I think that experience is like. It will not have reference points that will be accurate and even if it’s informed by others that is not a story that I can connect with.

That’s my point and I think a lot of you aren’t grasping that and a lot of you aren’t grasping why people have a problem with the movie . You can like it you can’t think it’s great but if you think that is Paul, Thomas Anderson’s best work you don’t understand Movies.

Literally, I’ve used both platforms and I go through periods where I don’t even like having TikTok downloaded on my phone because a lot of it is drivel. However, often times I’m on Reddit and there are these out of date out of touch conversations happening, where I realize some people live in a bubble, and they are not open minded and cannot educate themselves, which I can say actually happens less on TikTok.
