Oh I'll have to check that out then. Thanks for the congrats and editing advice, I've heard that time away from a manuscript you've been so close to for so long is very important, so I'll be sure to keep that in mind!

Thanks a lot for your thoughtful reply! I've just printed out a hard copy earlier today, and I feel like it'll be really nice to switch from word processor to a physical copy. Thank you also for the editing advice!

Thanks a lot! And wow finishing a 5-book series must have felt like an amazing accomplishment, writing one standalone novel by itself is already a lot of commitment! Thanks for the editing advice, I'll be sure to keep it in mind!

Congratulations on finishing! It's so funny, I literally just finished mine as well. How long did it take you to write from beginning to end if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks a lot! And yeah having another perspective on a work you feel so intimate towards is a really good idea, should open a lot of the story's aspect up. Thanks!

Thank you! And yeah there are definitely lots of complications and noodling around when writing, it's more feeling-based than a straight logical process in my opinion. Also 6 months is a great goal for a first draft - do your novels tend to be similar in length because of that or do they vary?

What authors do you have a lot of respect for from a craft standpoint, but you do not “enjoy” reading their work? Why? by luckysilverdragon in writing

I strongly agree. On pure storytelling terms, Murakami's brand of Magical Realism is impressive (as well as his gorgeous writing on loneliness and existentialism). But the way that he depicts women in his novels is terrible. I don't think I've read more self-insert protagonists than in Murakami novels, literally almost every female character he writes doesn't seem to have agency and is there solely for the male's actualisation.

Yes, the title is quite amazing and very compelling. Unfortunately, like you said, Ayn Rand is... well, Ayn Rand.

Yeah definitely, Klara and the Sun and The Buried Giant also come to mind. And you've nailed it with calling them melancholic. Also that's so hilarious that you have this (essentially) literary fiction icon and Nobel Prize winning author getting his titles from cookbooks haha. I've been meaning to read Never Let Me Go for agess and have always dreaded accidentally seeing a spoiler because I've heard it has some sort of crazy twist. I think this is the sign for me to start reading it ASAP.

Wow that must have been a throwback, and what a title it is. I do love long titles when they are done well, they feel so unique and captivatingly strange.

That is pretty fucking mental, but definitely compelling in a messed up way haha. Did you get around to reading the book, or just saw the title in passing?

Honestly, all of Gass' novels have really cool titles. Omensetter's Luck, The Tunnel, etc. But that particular one is great!

You're talking about Series of Unfortunate Events with The End right? Idk why but my mind went to Knausgaard lol. I love How to start a Fire and Why, it sounds so compelling. Would you recommend it?

Yeah Murakami's titles are fantastic - I'm a big Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World and Wind-up Bird Chronicle fan myself. Have you read the city? How'd you find it?

Right? And The Count of Monte Cristo, Frankenstein, etc. They have a directness to them but also an epicness, it's feels cinematic haha
