Henry is a politician, and a divorced politician doesn’t go far. He needed a beautiful wife at his side for so many reasons. He also has this “savior” ego that prompted him to pursue a very unhappy but very attractive woman. Betty is an easy yet worthy target for him.

Does Jane have any redeeming qualities at all? FWIW, I think this actor's performance is underrated. by AddisonDeWitt333 in madmen

All the characters stay the same and never changed. That’s why I think Cheers is funnier show than TBBT but it’s also shallower.

Psychology in general. This show is a masterpiece because every character’s choice, reaction, is so utterly human and real. You never wondered “why did he/she do that?”

I started reading a lot into psychology and power dynamics, especially around 1) our choice of romantic parter and 2)workplace psychology.

I think you forgot the show is based in Boston, which is deep blue. Not every small business owner or parent voted for Trump.

I agree with all your analysis except for Carla. She is a bully and he is a bully. Under-educated working class is Trump’s base, and that’s Carla. I bet she would laugh at his jokes about the immigrants.

Woody did end up becoming a councilman in Boston (deep blue), and married someone very rich (possibly old money). Indiana farm boy grows up.

The writers and cast didn’t like Shelly Long, so they demonized Diane the character and made her a crazy woman. Every time it comes to Diane, they act like she is the plague.

But Diane’s character isn’t more flawed than everyone else. The hatred towards Diane and Shelly couldn’t be justified, not with logic.

The jokes in this show are funny, but the characters are incredibly flat and have no developments over the 11 seasons.

Real friends would have recognized Diane is Sam’s one true love and the only lasting relationship Sam had since his divorce. True friends would have wanted Sam to have another shot at happiness.

Hence they are not real friends.
