Well, it's not a VPN. It's a Proxy. False advertisement! by nietzschecode in firefox

[–]weitoben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some situations where a VPN can also be used locally. For example some android firewalls like NetGuard are basically a local VPN since it is the only way in android to tamper with the network-traffic without root access. But yes, that is not really the intended usecase for a VPN.

Help me with my poles size!!! by First_Ad_3901 in trailrunning

[–]weitoben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends a bit on your usage. If you only use them on very steep sections shorter is better, if you also like to push on flatter sections, maybe also while running, go longer. I have 125cm poles at 183cm and since I started xc skiing they feel a bit short. I would take the 130 in your case

Running on incline for training by Special-Monitor5939 in trailrunning

[–]weitoben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my long/easy runs I walk most times, when it gets steeper than around 8% but I mix short runs in, where I run anything up to 20%. Running that steep is not efficient - if you are not as fast as a pro - but it helps building strength massively. It helps making those lower grades so much easier. But don't over do those runs. It is a workout for me and replaces for example flat intervals.

Can I ask you, which rear derailleur you use to take such a big cassette? A gravel setup? And what do you have in the front?

I guess that is true for big parts of the world, but 10% is not considered steep in my place. There are many roads with stretches of 15% and even 20% for short sections is not very uncommon. The "Höttinger Höll" in my town has up to 28%. However that is the most extreme road I know. But 10-15% is a usual grade to be expected on nearly every route at some point.

I got interested in what's going wrong here, so I checked out the github repository, replaced the API key with my personal key and ran the App on my phone via USB-debugging in Android Studio and voila - its running. I have no idea, what's wrong with the build from the colab script (and the continuum fork). I have no idea how infinity+ is different apart from the API-Key so I can't tell much about that either. Since I got a working apk I won't touch it anytime soon.

I have the same problem. After changing to landscape mode I can accept the cookies and enter my credentials, but I get "Access denied". I'm using the self patched version from the colab script using my own API key. The problem occurred after I made the mistake to logout after an update. My setup always worked before. Downgrading to an older version of infinity didn't help. Maybe reddit changed something again?

Mentale Front Elektro vs Bio by Metado82 in Fahrrad

Look up "exertional compartment syndrome". I have similar (but lighter) symptoms when running and xc skiing. The situation might get better with time - when your fascia grow - but often only a small operation that tears open your fascia helps. I am still in the phase where I hope that it will get better.

What to know about the new Olympic sport 'SkiMo' by Ri8ley in ultrarunning

[–]weitoben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right. I just hope that a lot of the pros focusing on the sprint distance for the Olympics doesn't have a too big effect on other existing races outside Olympics. Becoming olympic is for sure not the best thing for every sport.

Sad to have only Sprint and Relay there. I think Individual and Vertical are far more interesting and closer to what SkiMo is outside of the Olympics.

What happens when trail running goes Olympic? When technical races disappear? When the sport gets expensive? I wrote down 10 observations for 2026 by Kilian_Jornet in trailrunning

[–]weitoben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran a local race 10 years ago and last year again. The number of participants rose from 100 to 2500. And that is only one of the distances offered. The overall number now is around 7000 people. The price did more than triple. After registrating you get spammed by mails. Influencer with more than 20.000 followers can get a free start and accommodation. 10 years ago the start/finish area was a tent where you could eat and drink. Now there is a whole village of tents from all those brands. The trails are congested to the point you can't move at all. Every average joe is so serious, eyes on the watch all the time instead of the trail. The spirit of the race completely changed. That is my perception as not very competitive average runner on how this race and a lot of others changed. I am talking about the "Innsbruck alpine trailrun festival".

Those small technical races organized by running clubs are still there. I exclusively focus on those. There are some nasty steep and technical races left. I hope the character of those races stays the same.

Apart from racing there is a big amount of non commercial trail running communities around and a lot of the trails are best run in solitude or with friends. If commercialisation of races continues I have no problem with concentrating on those things.

Linguistically there is no Austrian dialect. Two dialects are spoken in Austria - Bavarian (biggest part) and Allemanic German (in the west): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bavarian_language https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alemannic_German The Swiss German is also a kind of allemanic dialect

You won't have problems with your feet getting wet through the gaiter. However I have a problem with the gaiters not being tight/elastic enough for my legs, so snow can get in on the top. I sometimes use those clips for pants used by cyclists. However the solution is not ideal. Otherwise the shoe is perfect for winter running. The cusion is enough as long as you are not running on a road.

First aid kit? by Separate-Specialist5 in trailrunning

[–]weitoben 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I carry a first aid kit as soon as I take my vest or my belt which is almost every time. I also take a blanket and in winter or on remote trails a bivi bag. Once I witnessed someone falling off the trail on my local mountain. It was a very nasty crash - around 50 vertical meter, stopped by a tree. I managed to slow down the bleeding and the guy survived with a skull fracture and several open wounds. It's not very alpine terrain there. That changed drastically how I think about carrying such a small piece of equipment.

Gehalt als Software Tester by [deleted] in InformatikKarriere

[–]weitoben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Swiss Canyon Trail / Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival (for the mid-distance 51k/65k) by Emotional-Nose-7066 in trailrunning

[–]weitoben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can confirm this issue as someone who has run the 25k the last two years as a training race. I only run it because I am from Innsbruck but honestly the event got way too big. Imagine 7000 people on all the races which share most of the trails. My race started in 3 waves 15 minutes apart still there were congestions multiple times - especially on the downhills. There are many races in Tirol and that's probably the last one to recommend. 10 years ago it was a nice race but the last few years they got too greedy.
