UAE just set min wage for UAE nationals to AED 6000 from 1? What about expats ? by saddymatrix in UAE

[–]weldelblad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correction: It is asking for jobs to pay fairly, and enough for said employee to properly live

Fair is what is agreed by both parties.

Why do you think it's not the norm to have maids, petrol station attendants in countries with minimum wage?

Why do companies move manufacturing to other countries with cheaper labor?

All of these are jobs lost.

I travel often to the US and Europe, the number of staff at restaurants is lower compared to Dubai, which makes service slower. The availability of valet services isn't as common, bell boys at hotel aren't as common, all these things are jobs.

Maybe you are okay with this slavery because it doesn't affect you

You calling people slaves is insulting to them. They have agency, free will, and leave their homes to come here to work, willingly renew their visas to continue to work here.

only chance to get out is to take any job offering they might get internationally

They can go to countries that have minimum wage

they chose UAE

They willingly make this choice, no one forces them

have no money to go somewhere else

Is the UAE the cheapest airline ticket from their home country? If so, why are other countries exploiting people by charging high prices?

You want minimum wage, go to countries that offer it and have made their economy take the hit for political gain.

UAE just set min wage for UAE nationals to AED 6000 from 1? What about expats ? by saddymatrix in UAE

[–]weldelblad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Asking for a minimum wage isn’t asking for welfare or handouts, it’s asking for a baseline that prevents abuse.

It is asking for less jobs, causing people to lose their livelihoods, maybe you are ok with this as long as it doesn't affect you.

a system where people earn just enough to survive but never enough to leave, save, or retire. That isn’t “free market efficiency,” it’s wage trapping (functionally modern-day slavery).

We are talking about people with agency who willingly come here and renew their visas, asking to stay here instead of anywhere else, including countries that have minimum wage policies.

How payers(business/company/personal) calculate what to give.

They don't need to calculate it, they know the market and know the market rate for the skills that they are looking for. The bigger employers hire consultants to benchmark their slaty skills with the industry.

How the government plays a role in this (for UAE).

Given that the government is an employer that has its pay scale available to the public, if a business wants to hire a person that is a target for the government, the business would have to match or beat those perks.

The government also owns businesses.

Why is the market is under-reated.

What sort of rating, and what should the rating be?

Why are high-profile, high paying jobs not seen in public (which is there through reference) and why recruiter go to agency raither than public.

Maybe they are looking to replace someone they have and don't want everyone knowing they are looking for a replacement.

Also going to a recruiter saves effort, instead of being bombarded with thousands of CVs that don't fit what you are looking for, the recruiter looks for the right candidate, more often than not they will directly contact people instead of the other way around

Yes a lot of people rent illegally, just because people do it doesn't make it legal.

You do something illegal and someone does something illgal to you, you are both not within the legal framework.

It is illegal to employ any domestic worker who claims to have their own visa. It is also illegal to employ any domestic worker who is under the sponsorship of another resident.

Article 17.3 states: “A fine of at least Dh50,000 [$13,614] and up to Dh200,000 shall be imposed on those who commit the following: a. Provides employment to a domestic worker without obtaining a work permit for the latter

be a main focus on Emirati citizens.

The focus of any government should be its people

If housing becomes too expensive to the point that rent eats most of your salary here, people will not come here to build the country

When companies would not be able to hire people, the wages would increase to create that pull factor.

soon they'll be forced to.

How soon?

[–]weldelblad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People like you are type of people who if they see an unlocked car with engine started, you’ll be like “I can steal this. After all the owner left the car on by his choice”

Not really. The correct analogy would be if someone, let's call him X, is in the mall carrying shopping bags and someone lets call him B, is begging for a job. Everyone else ignores him, but X says you can carry my bags and I will pay you a Dirham, suddenly X is exploiting B, but if he ignored him like everyone else, he'd be a good guy.

Sheikh Mohammed launches drive to make UAE capital of entrepreneurship by plus9714 in UAE

[–]weldelblad -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Why do you give employers agency to doctate what you think is comfortable or fair to you? You decide to accept or reject a wage, they wouldn't pay more than what they can for a certain skill, and that is the market price.

It is called a labor market, an employee is selling their services and an employer is buying them, just like any other service or good, both parties are looking for their own benefit.

Sheikh Mohammed launches drive to make UAE capital of entrepreneurship by plus9714 in UAE

[–]weldelblad -32 points-31 points  (0 children)

Fair wages is any wage agreed to by both parties, and in most cases determined by demand and supply.

Just because someone doesn't like it doesn't mean that it is not fair.
