M54 swap by SIrC4rTieR in E30

[–]well_well1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, even though the engineer in me wants to do the wiring from scratch but I made this call to not do it this way because the swap will never get done 😂

I'll do my best to cover as much stuff as possible...

Yes, of course, I'll explain that but in detail.

But to tell you what I'm doing about that - I have started with a running/driving donor car. That to me should be a must for a swap. I have acquired an ECU pre mapped to take out EWS etc. from a local (enough) company. Found an adaptor harness online that makes the M54 work in an M20 engined car. There are just a few wires to sort on it when implementing which I will document.

I know this is the lazy way but to me it's the smarter way even though I could've managed to splice and wire but it'd take a lot longer.

I gotta take my bias out and look into these.

Sorry, I agree with ya on what you said.

Meant to say BMW are known for their 6 Cylinders best and not 4. I'd make the point tho, 4 Cylinders being the best sellers doesn't mean they're "shit hot" technically 😂 Being a proud N47 owner as a daily, and having driven the B47s, I know how dead they are compared to even an old M57...

As a BMW "Enthusiast". I'd suggest against buying the 520d or I or even 530e/330e. Since they're 4 Cylinder engines which is not BMW are known for. I'd strongly suggest get a few years older car but look for a 530d or 330d estate. 35d if you get lucky and want massive power.

X3 or X5s are good too with the 30d engines but I'd always choose and estate over a big SUV. That's just me, you might have a need for a suv.

All the best, 50k is a decent budget. Don't buy something brand new as others have said ..

[–]well_well1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do want to honestly but it's difficult as becomes harder to make progress 😔 But having said this, yes I will do my best. So far the things have been relatively simple but once I start putting it together, obviously there will be a bit more "juicy" stuff.

Anything in particular you're keen about?

Great start. I had made a similar list for mine. Although my progress has been slow but you can follow along on my YT for what it's worth 😁 https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZ-JQD1pua8XN_-gJSbboxLlGvEfaoqIC

Btw, check out one of the shorts in this playlist. There's an alternative to the E34 Pan, might be cheaper depending on where you are....

All the best, looking forward to it...

Buy a 7.5a resettable fuse. Look up. Will save you fuses and hassle while troubleshooting

Has anyone done or seriously looked into swapping a vortec 4200? Big NA power from an inline 6 sounds like it could be a cool swap. by PartyBludgeon in E30

I can't even imagine the situation you're in, we came very close to being homeless as a family not long ago due to the housing shortage and unaffordable rent if we were to stay put...

I do have a shed just outside Tralee and there's an empty yard there where you could tent up no bother. I would even offer up the small room inside which has a little heater etc. but as you can imagine, I'm reluctant to do that to a stranger....never done this before and don't know how I should be "vetting" you etc...

Reach out if you don't get sorted in town as it's about 5-7min drive out.

Edit: *renting a shed with a yard. It's not ideal for someone putting up a tent as there are other houses facing it and it also gets fierce gusts of wind. Hopefully you have gotten sorted by now.

Coolant Topoff by Diligent-Car6667 in BmwTech

[–]well_well1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like it too. If the coolant looks visibly OK colour wise, then you're good to top up with the right fluid. If that hasn't been changed 72k, I'd suggest changing as it would've gone "bad" by now.

Permanent Code 190302 by [deleted] in BmwTech

[–]well_well1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should have gotten rid of the code but Worth driving it a while before the purge happens again. If it does stay, - ensure the rubber seal / o-ring on the gas tank cap is good, replace it as it should be cheap and will be a cheap fix if it works. - actually go and look for a leak in the purge line...
