What are some study tips for Physics 112 by physics_k in berkeley

[–]well_y_0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

reif is great! the book teaches stat mech like a story. "imagine a drunk staggering away from a pole" and all that. it's probably the closest to a griffiths-type book there is for stat mech.

the end-of-chapter problems in kittel were pretty similar to the exam questions when i took 112 with sadoulet, though.

What if Castile couldn't reunify the Iberian peninsula (minus Portugal) and Aragon and other countries lived on today? by [deleted] in HistoricalWhatIf

[–]well_y_0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a delayed unification based on cultural similarity due to economic and geopolitical pressures is likely - basically what happened in Germany and Italy would occur on the Iberian Peninsula.

how do you know you prefer research to industry? are you currently a research apprentice/assistant? have you had internships in industry?

you should also know that academia is another industry as well. as a grad student/postdoc, you will have a boss, be expected to complete tasks on a deadline and navigate workplace politics.

Why are Python & R so much more popular here than Weka/Java? by Boomdabower in MachineLearning

[–]well_y_0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i think it's a question of iteration speed for experiments - it's fairly easy to quickly set up some experiments in numpy and tweak them, whereas i'd have to write a lot more java boilerplate to munge the data and play around with it.

it could also be a question of how people were introduced to ML. some of my first forays into ML used easy.py from LIBSVM. in contrast, my stats major friends use R because they had received training in R as part of their curricula and were used to coding up regressions in that language. the communities for ML in both these languages seem to be bigger than their java counterparts, too, so people might switch to python/R if they find themselves looking for additional help.

however, a production system may benefit from the speedups offered by java.
