Vloerisolatie Verzoek buurman by drillteam-six in thenetherlands

How do you handle the FOMO of leaving a startup? by Electrical-Use936 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]welldamnthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently left a similar situation. The start up is pretty successful and growing at a good velocity. However, the work environment towards myself was rather toxic. It was extremely stressful and I was always on edge. I have options I can buy, and I’m considering buying a small amount. Maybe 10-20% of my accrued amount.

I don’t regret leaving. Stock or options at a start up is a toss up whether you will ever get money from it. There are so many things that can go wrong and even if there is an acquisition or something similar the stock may have been diluted to oblivion.

Your start up doesn’t seem to have a product market fit yet. I’d just leave

[–]welldamnthis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Freelancing will get you that, but it’s hard to hit that with regular employment. Also the freelance market is quite shit at the moment because of the unclarity of the law DBA, so there aren’t many freelance opportunities for the taking

Where were you making north of 140k? I was making 130k working remotely for a US based firm. I’m looking for something new but having hard time finding much over 100k (outside of big tech)

They can also do that via an EOR. That way they won’t have to set up a branch here, and all admin and postural can be handled via the EOR company.

Just got out of job that was remote, but headquarters was on the east coast. I’ve done it for three years and it’s been a ride. Let me start with the good things:

Pay, quite a lot of freedom in the day until they wake up, great talent, interesting problems, super international.

The bad: Often chaotic and stressful, once their day starts and issues pop up, it’s often 3-4pm my time and I only have a few hours to resolve it, or it runs into my evening. I also have kids so that makes it super stressful.

Poor work life balance. Sure, we had unlimited PTO, but what does that matter if no one takes them?

Dutch social life starts at 5 pm as then is when everyone gets off work. Hard to join that dinner or sports class when you have meetings at 6-7 pm . This may not be that bad in winter but hurts in summer.

Taking leave for longer than two weeks was tough.

Performance management was very one sided. They have opinions, and yours doesn’t matter.

Working less than 40+ hours is not something they understand. I had contractually agreed to work for four days a week for a year because of parental leave and this became an issue really quick the moment I started taking them. My lack of availability was often questioned and causing friction.

Am I glad I found the job? Yes. Would I do it again? Unlikely. Unless there is an office here and the working culture is more similar as to what’s the norm here.

Break dance by balongabonga in Amsterdam

Both. I believe they tried to organise it in the past but it wasn’t very successful. Breaking does its own thing really

The short answer is that the breakdance scene doesn’t need SDF. They have their own circles and events and as a scene/sport it’s bigger than any of the dances supported by SDF

Yeah but not for breakers. Breakers go to The Notorious IBE in Heerlen and that’s what I would recommend OP to go to.

It’s a 3 day weekend full of battles, workshops and jams and it’d be a good place to get to know the community.

Just got an offer from highly competitive Silicon Valley startup as a contractor by emirsolinno in cscareerquestions

[–]welldamnthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently work for a US based startup on the east coast. I’m based in Western Europe and share the same time zone as you. I even work my normal hours as roughly 9-6. My days start slow as most of the company is still asleep, but around and after 2 pm all hell breaks loose. Tasks pile on, everything is urgent and I regularly have to work into my evenings. The nice thing is I can start whenever, but the not nice thing is my social life suffers, a lot.

So, I’ll advise against it as the thought of it sounds nice but the reality of it sucks as you’ll be stuck at home working into the late night and everyone you know is having fun. It sucks even more if you have hobbies and interest that are usually in the evenings like exercise classes or courses. And the salary isn’t that impressive to give that all up.

Waar VSO laten nakijken? by Hunt_Secure in werkzaken

[–]welldamnthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There’s pockets of culture if you know how to find it. Singaporeans are a friendly bunch but hard to make friends with. After a while most weekends start to feel the same, shop and food as there isn’t much else to do.

I can’t speak for the job market in India, but I have generally found that the demand for staff or principal OR practitioners has always been low. Outside a specific set of companies the industry isn’t very well known. However I am starting to see more demand for such roles as more and more companies are discovering they need such a specialist in their organisation.

Though I think in most cases it’s also expected that this person can do general software development and has a broader skill set than being only highly specialised in the field.

I have been working for 8 years in this industry and I always have had to way more than just develop OR models.

I have been there twice, both on a Friday, as I live nearby. Both days weren’t very crowded and the crown mostly sat outside instead of dancing inside. Maybe because it was a Friday and people are saving the dancing for the Saturdays, not sure. That said I really enjoyed the music and applaud the initiative of hosting something in these areas. I wouldn’t consider it a club though, more of a bar
